Subject: Cary of Upcerne
Dear all
I would like to ask if anyone else is researching the Carys of Upcerne or Hackney.
The rather haphazard tree that I have begins with Nicholas Cary. He lived approx
1630's to 1690's. His family lived in Upcerne in Dorset where, according to his
will he was a major land owner, he also had many properties in London.
He and his wife identify themselves as being 'of Hackney' in their wills and his
daughter married the son of Sir Ambrose Phillipps who was a Sergeant at Law for James I
and my ancestor - hence my interest!
This is the first marriage that I have on record for the two families, there are at least
2 others I know of, the latest being Anne Cary to Charles Lisle in 1736 ( different
surname - same line!! ).
One source says Nicholas was a goldsmith, I rather suspect he was more of a merchant/money
lender.
I also suspect his wife Susan and Sir Ambs wife Mary were sisters if not first cousins as
I have a surname of Riccards for both - not completely happy with my sources so just a
suspicion at this time.
One last clue that I have is that the Phillipps family were involved in the East India
Company or more specifically the Levant Company and called themselves Turkey Merchants, I
believe the dealt with Smyrna importing carpets and so on.
If any of you have come across this particular branch please let me know, similarly I
would be very glad to hear of any advice or ideas.
Thanks for reading,
Pippa
