From a newspaper article "Our Gallery of Maine Mothers":
Prominent among the names of the mothers of famous Maine women is to be
found that of Mrs. Maria Stockbridge Cary, wife of Dr. Nelson Howard Cary,
and mother of the world-renowned songstress, Annie Louise Cary Raymond.
The eldest daughter of Wm. Reed Stockbridge of Hanover, Mass. and Olive
True Stockbridge of North Yarmouth, Maine, Mrs. Cary was born in the latter
town August 1, 1806. During her early childhood she remained in Yarmouth.
Later on, she attended school at Mrs. Fiske's Seminary in Keene, N.H.,
completing her education at Dr. Butler's Female Seminary in East Winthrop,
which was in it's day one of the most popular and best patronized educational
institutions in Maine. In 1829, Miss Stockbridge married Dr. Nelson H. Cary
of Winthrop, at that time the leading physician in that section. She died
September 9, 1851, the mother of six children, three sons and three
daughters, the most notable of whom had been the youngest daughter , Annie
Louise Cary, than whom no more gifted woman has ever left the Pine Tree State.
All the children inherited decided musical ability. One of the sons,
Captain William Howard Cary of Boston, has for many years been known in and
about "the Hub" as a gifted singer. Of the great prima donna, who has made
the name of Cary, wherever song is know (sic), a household word, no words of
praise are needed here.
