Hi,
You don't give your name and location (which is customary) but I have a
suggestion.
If you are in Virginia, your county librarian should be able to direct you
to the procedures for obtaining the Virginia Federal census film and reading
it in the local library. Or if you are near a LDS Family History Center,
you can order Federal census and use it in their library.
Some states took state [as vs Federal] census on off years, i.e., 1905,
1915, 1925. I don't know if this was true of VA, but in NJ where I did a
lot of research for a relative it was extremely helpful. No index however.
But a line by line reading of an area can give you a better feel for the
community than looking it up in an index.
I have not done VA research in the 1800s & 1900s, a little in late 1700s.
But certain procedures remain constant from state to state.
Also suggest you obtain death certificates for all persons you are
interested. This takes a little time and $'s, but is well worth the effort.
