I wasn't following the thread that sparked this response but the phrase is
"Nigger in a woodpile" and the origins are from a scandal involving a Miles Cary
descendant who was related to the extended Thomas Jefferson family. I don't have my
files with me to give her name, but she was accused of having her brother-in-laws child
which was stillborn or shortly died after birth. She was also accused of having the child
of a slave, and that the child was buried in the woodpile, hence the phrase. Who ever the
father was, she became a virtual prisoner in her sister's home until she married a
prominent New Yorker.
