Marty
Luther Cary's mother was Seth Cary's secretary/assistant during the
compilation of John Cary, the Plymouth Pilgrim. Luther naturally became
involved in the work and rather compulsively carried on until he died,
somewhat to the regret of his children who gave me all his papers after he
died. He and his wife spent years in courthouses, town libraries, and
cemeteries collecting information, but not always identifying the sources as
well as we do today.
To answer your question 'How well is his information about the Barnabas
who is not the descedant of John?', here are the sources Luther cites:
Cary Bulletin No. 9, May 1910
Mitchell's History of Bridgewater
Land Records in Chepachet, Town of Glocester, R.I.
Dagett's History of Attleboro, Mass.
Attleboro Vital Records, including:
Mary Short and Barnabas CRARY of Providence, R.I., mar. Feb
24 1759
Birth of their first two children surnamed CRARY
Birth of later children all surnamed CARY.
Birth of John Scott who married Mehitable Cary.
Birth of Mary Scott who married Barnabas Cary, Jr.
History of Rindge, N.H
Vital Records of Rindge, N.H.
The misidentification of Barnabas CLARY as the son of Joseph CARY is the
biggest mistake in Seth Cary's book and the subject of much correspondence
and research, some of which I found in the New England Historic Genealogical
Society Library in Boston. I am convinced that Luther Cary researched the
problem thoroughly and resolved it accurately.
Happy Hunting . . . . . Dave
