"Although it is literally falling apart at the seams, this leather-bound family
bible is still probably a valuable genealogical document for the Cary family of
the Topsham, Maine, area. Although it starts at the first page of Genesis (i.e.
the title page and any preface or contents pages are missing), there is a
separate title page for the New Testament, from which we can deduce that it is
published by the American Bible Society, of New York, with a publication date of
1870. The previous four pages contain the handwritten family records of the CARY
family. The first entries - apparently made in or soon after 1876 - cover the
births, marriages and deaths during the period 1809-1876, and subsequent entries
(in different inks and handwriting) continue the family history through 1893.
Included in the lot are a bunch of papers I found inserted in the bible, most of
which contain notes of later death and burial dates (through 1933), plus a
prescription form dated 190... and old handwritten recipes for brown bread and
sweet pickle (the latter signed by Mrs. Rosa Cary, Topsham). It is 812 pages
long, and measures about 4-3/4" x 7". As already stated, it is in seriously
deteriorated condition, with the binding falling apart and lots of loose pages,
with resulting ragged and chafed edges, especially in the second half of the
book. Oh, and I just found the title page, but the FFEP and everything else
before the first page of Genesis still seems to be missing. The cover itself is
separating at the front and back of the spine, and there is a lot of surface and
edge wear, with large chips out of the top and bottom of the spine. Winning
bidder pays shipping and packing. Maine residents, please add 5.5 percent sales
tax. Good luck, bidders!"
