TODAY'S TIP: OUTLINE OF ENGLAND'S CHURCH HISTORY--PART 2 OF 3
by Diane J. Muir
In our last tip, we began a three-part series briefly covering
England's church history. Today, we'll continue our outline.
- 1606--A law required Roman Catholics to be baptized and married by
Church of England clergy and to be buried in the Church of England
churchyard. Baptisms and marriages continued in private, but most
people complied with the burial rulings.
- 1612--The first General Baptist Church was created.
- 1620--A group of Independents sailed on the Mayflower to the New
World.
- 1630--Puritans seeking church reform left for New England.
- 1642-1660--During the Commonwealth Civil War, records were poorly
kept.
- 1644--Presbyterian and Independent records were begun, but few still
exist.
- 1653-1660--Records were kept by government-appointed registers or
preachers.
- 1656--Society of Friends records began.
- 1685--England had a considerable increase in Huguenot refugees from
France and parts of Western Germany.
- 1695-1706--A tax was assessed on church registers. To avoid the tax,
some people didn't register events.
