TODAY'S TIP: OUTLINE OF ENGLAND'S CHURCH HISTORY--PART 3 OF 3
by Diane J. Muir
Today we'll complete our brief outline of England's church history.
Enjoy!
- 1733--English replaced Latin in the records.
- 1735--The Wesleyan Methodist group began.
- 1752--The first day of the year changed from March 25 (Lady's Day)
to January 1.
- 1754--Lord Hardwicke's Act outlawed marriages outside the Church of
England (except for Quakers and Jews) and required that separate
registers for marriages be kept. Common-law marriages were outlawed.
- 1778--Laws against Roman Catholics were repealed and priests began
to keep public records. (Some included private records as well.)
- 1812--The George Rose Act required Church of England christenings,
marriages, and burials to be kept in separate registers. (They were
previously mixed.)
- 1837--Civil Registration began. However, religious events were still
recorded in parish registers.
- 1837--Mormon missionaries (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints) began to preach in the Preston, Lancashire area. Other
nonconformist churches became much more noticeable.
