Cousins,
This is a good site for genealogy tips. They send me an e-mail
everyday with good information like this. I thought this was so
important that I would post it. I'll post the rest of the tips that
she gives on church history in England.

TODAY'S TIP: OUTLINE OF ENGLAND'S CHURCH HISTORY--PART 1 OF 3
by Diane J. Muir
Over the next few tips, we'll give you a brief outline of England's
church history for research purposes. Here goes!
- 1531--Henry VIII recognized as head of the Church of England. All
business with the Roman Catholic Church and the Pope was discontinued.
- 1538--Thomas Cromwell ordered all parish ministers to keep a record
of christenings, marriages, and burials. These became known as parish
registers.
- 1563--The Test Act excluded Roman Catholics from government office
and fined them if they did not attend Church of England services. (So,
even if your ancestors were Catholic, you should check the Church of
England records for information about them.)
- 1568--Puritans ordained their own ministers and tried unsuccessfully
to separate from the Church of England. The Puritan movement split to
become the Presbyterians and the Separatists.
- 1580--Separatist Robert Browne and his followers became known as
Independents or Congregationalists.
- 1598--Parish registers were required to be kept on parchment, and
previous registers were copied onto parchment.
