Hi,
I am a new subscriber to the list looking for information about the
following Carys:
Jerusha CARY b. abt. Jan. 5, 1788 Probably in NY, d. Jackson Co, MI
Apr. 16, 1848
m. Lyman HAWLEY prob. in Washington Co. NY abt 1805.
Family history mentions a tobacco box carried by Phineas CARY in
Revolutionary War.
I believe that Phineas CARY was Jerusha's father. I have found a Phineas
CARY who married Mary HURLBUT in CT and later moved to NY. I have seen
three children listed for him none of them being Jerusha. I have also
seen a Phineas CARY listed as serving in the
Revolutionary War with Pennslyvania units. Is this the same Phineas
CARY? Does anyone have information about either of these Phineas CARY's
or Jerusha CARY?
I have seen Mary HURLBUT(HURLBUTT) (HURLBURT) listed as the daughter of
Elijah HURLBUTTand as the daughter of Elisha HURLBUTT. One of these
Mary's was born in 1737 and the other in 1746. Which one married Phineas
CARY in CT??
Thanks for any information you can provide.

Hello Palmer,
Your post caught my eye. I don't think we are looking at the same Cary
family, but we are both interested in Carys that lived in Sangamon Co., IL.
Members of my Cary familiy moved to Sangamon County from Monroe Co., OH around
1855 and they lived there until at least 1880. The family lived in Delaware,
probably in Sussex County, before they moved to Ohio. I thought I'd run this
all by you just in case there is another similarity somewhere.

I see that Burke's Dormant & Extinct Peerage (1883) says that John Cary b.
1325 married Jane Holwell, widow of Guy de Bryan. Other genealogies say that
he married Jane de Bryan daughter of Guy de Bryan. Does anyone know which is
accurate, daughter or widow?
Thanks,
Jay

Sorry for my delayed response but I just got in from two weeks in China.
My CARY research interest is to find descendants of FRANCIS SINCLAIR CARY
and MARY CATHERINE SHUTT (daughter of William Riley Shutt and Lucinda
Shelton) m 14 nOV 1861 in Muhlenberg Co, KY. They migrated with their nine
(I believe there were 9) children to Sangamon Co, IL. Children: William

descendants but would be estatic if it were to yield any genealogists with
knowlege about the SHUTT, GATES and GROVES families from whom William Riley
SHUTT (above) descend.

Jim,
I too am researching my CAREY ancestors and have seen the surname
spelled CARY on several documents. My line of CAREYs have been decidedly
Catholic; one was a member of the founding board of St. Joseph's Church
in Troy, NY established in 1858. Unfortunately, I've been unable to
determine what county in Ireland they were from.

Hello Becky. I am descended from John Cary and Alice Hobson but seem to
have an inaccurate birth date, 1650, for her. This makes her much
younger than her husband. Like you, I would also like to know more
about her father, Captain Thomas Taylor. I do not even have a birth or
death date for him or where he was born. I do have more on the Cary
family going back to Adam de Kari b. 1170 in Castle Kari in Somerset,
England. I also have a little more on the father of Alice Hobson, Henry
Hobson, if that would be any help to you.
My line from John and Alice Cary is
Miles (Mylles) Cary and Anne Taylor.
Bridget Cary and William Bassett.
Mary Bassett and Edward Daingerfield.
Mary Bassett Daingerfield and William Starke M.D.
Robert Bolling Starke and Mattie T. Lindsay.
Anne Starke and Robert Barron Cunningham, Commodore, USN.
Robert Barron Cunningham and Kate Eugenie McDowell.
Robert McDowell Cunningham and Ellen Lydie Bartie.
Robert Archibald Cunningham and Annie Amelda McDonald.
Robyn Judith Cunningham and Ronald Herbet Lowndes.
The last female is ME.
You will probably get several replies to your question both on the Cary
lists and privately.
I will be looking at the Cary lists, but in case you only get private
mail, then could you please keep me in mind and get back to me with
anything extra on Captain Taylor, or anything else you think might be
interesting.
Thank you and good hunting.
Robyn Lowndes in the very wet state of NSW, Australia.

Sending the little info I have on the Carey's in MD. On Lawrence's death
certificate it stated he was born in Dublin, IReland. As you will notice
most of my information was gotten from census records. My grandmother was a
Carey. Researching the female side of family has not been easy for me. I
have only been able to find information on immediate family, of which were
living in Frederick CO., MD. There didn't seem to be very many Carey's in
the Frederick Co census . Have no clues as to where they migrated after
arriving in US. Hoping you may be able to make a connection

The children of Hugh and Anna Duffey ( emigrated from Sligo Island in Ireland)
in 1842.)were Katherine, John 12/3/1852, Mary 1860, James, Mark, Robert,
Dennis, Francis. The children of John and Lu Ella Huffman were Mabel, Lora,
William, Clyde, John LLoyd, Leo, Earl and Cecil.
I would be interested to see if perhaps there are some cousins with our two
families. I haven't spent much time looking in census data for Hugh but am
sure that something might even be in a Catholic church record in CT where he
married his wife from Ireland. It is my understanding that there was great
pride among the Irish that emigrated prior to the 1850s.
Would be interested in any sources in MD that you used,

I'm trying to tap the cumulative CARY/CAREY knowledge of this list to see if
anyone can assist me in finding my Great Grandfathers hometown in County Mayo.

name spelled William CARY, yet it looks to me like he signed it CAREY; then
later he shows up on the NY census as CARY, yet in his move to Wisconsin, he

area in Mayo where there is a significant presence in Mayo of both the
surnames CARY/CAREY and KILROY. I'd also be interested in what religion they
might have been, since my family is now both Catholic and Protestant and while
William was buried from the Catholic Church, I have an incling that may have
been due to my Grandmother Ryan's influence.
Any and all responses gratefully appreciated, including any history on the
origin of the CARY and/or CAREY names.

I am trying to find out about a possible Carey/Cary connection. I have the
following information from the Thurston Genealogies by Brown Thurston:
David Thurston son of John and Hannah Thurston married Feb. 16, 1712/13,
Mercy Carey whose grandmother was sister to Josiah Standish's wife. David
was from Medfield, MA.
I can't quite follow the relationship here.
As far as I can tell, from Mayflower Increasings, Josiah Standish, son of
Miles, had a daughter Mary who married a James Cary 4 Jan 1681. Josiah
Standish was married to a Sarah Allen and a Mary Dingley. Who were James
Cary's children ? Was Mercy a daughter of James, or is she related to
Sarah Allen or Mary Dingley? If so, where did she get the name Carey?
Does anyone have more information on this line?

Do you have any information on the other children of John. When I saw your

There is a book written about the Miles Cary line that goes back to William
Cary in 1492. It is called The Virginia Carys by Fairfax Harrison. It also
lists allied Cary families. You should be able to obtain a copy through
interlibrary loan. You can also purchase a reprint through Blair's Book
Service. Hope this helps.

It looks like there were multiple unrelated Car(e)ys in Bond Co., IL.
Loretta's Carys were definitely related to my Kemp Cary line which came out
of Virginia. Pamela's Carey's came out of Delaware and are not related
(conclusively, that is). It appears that Abby's Carys may be related to
Pamela's but not Loretta's.
I would like to know if any of the Ohio Car(e)y researchers can identify a
Madison Carey (b. abt. 1816-1821) or Wilson Cary (b. 1816-1819). Both of
these men appeared in Jackson Co., MO in the late 1830's and early 1840's,
claiming to have been born in Ohio.
Susan Molye <molye(a)erols.com>
Hello Pamela and other Cary researchers,
Your post caught my eye . . . My gr-gr-grandmother, Mary Ellen (Cary)
Johnston Blair (b. in DE 1834) lived in Clinton Co., IL (next door to Bond Co.)
around 1900. I haven't yet found her in 1870 but she was probably living
somewhere in IL since her son, Samuel Blair was born in IL in 1868. It appears
she moved from OH to IL to be near her Cary relatives after her husband died in
1864. I don't know what Mary Ellen's father's name was, but her mother's name
was Sarah and she was born around 1799 in DE.
Here is what I have so far for the parents of ?? and Sarah Cary, all born
in DE (all years given are approximate):
Robert b. 1820 m. Mary 1844
Samuel b. 1824 m. Anna FOGLE 1849
Thomas b. 1827 m. Fanny 1849
James b. 1830 m. Sarah 1850
Comfort b. 1833
Mary Ellen b. 1834 m. James T. JOHNSTON
Does any of this ring a bell? There was an Eli and a Comfort Cary in DE in the
early census records which I thought might have a connection as Mary Ellen
named one of her sons Eli and she had a sister named Comfort.
