Hello Cary Researchers,
Here is my updated information. I have not yet had the time to follow
up on the new information, but it seems to "fit" the information I
already had on the family.
Thomas Cary, Sr. (d. 1767), and Elizabeth had son, Samuel. (Thomas Cary
is evidently a descendant of the immigrant to Maryland, Thomas Cary,
through his son, John.
Samuel Cary, b. 4 April 1750; m. Comfort Waples on 12 Feb. 1779. Samuel
d. 1 June 1796) and Comfort d. 12 June 1817.
Eli Cary, son of Samuel and Comfort (Waples) Cary m. (1) Elizabeth
"Betsy"
the daughter of William Waples. Their children:
Elizabeth Harmonson Cary, bp. 9 Dec. 1816
Jane Ann Cary, b. 15 Sept. 1816
Betsy (Waples) Cary d. 11 Oct. 1818
Eli and second wife, Sarah "Sally" had children baptized (Coolspring
Presbyterian Church Records (Sussex Co., DE) reported in Turner
manuscript, p. 13)
[Note: all of the above information plus the birth of Marie Katherine
and baptism records listed below are all from Source #1, given below.
This source also indicates Eli Cary was the Eli Cary who served under
Capt. Paynter Frame (Delaware) during the War of 1812]:
Marie Katherine Cary, b. 9 Dec. 1821
Samuel Hazlet Cary, bp. 7 Mar. 1824 Presbyterian Church, Lewes, DE;
m. Anna FOGLE about 1849 in or near Monroe Co., OH
Eunice Susan Cary, bp. 14 May 1826
Thomas Copes Cary, bp. 13 Jan. 1828;
m. Fanny about 1849 in or near Monroe Co., OH
James Collins Cary, bp. 5 Sept. 1830;
m. Sarah about 1850 in or near Monroe Co., OH
Comfort Collins Cary, bp. 9 Sept. 1832
Mary Catherine Cary, bp. 10 Oct. 1835;
b. Nov. 1834 according to 1900 Clinton County, IL census
m. James T. JOHNSTON in or near Monroe Co., OH
(her son's death certificate gives her maiden name as Mary Ellen Cary
but all of the other records found so far give her name as either
Mary or Mary C.)
[Although not listed in this source, I believe Robert Cary, b. about
1820 in DE and married Mary (surname unknown) about 1844 was another son
based on the fact he appears to be the only other Cary who lived in
Monroe Co., OH and Sangamon Co., IL at the same time other members of
the family lived there.
The courthouse in Monroe Co., OH burned in 1867 and the marriage and
birth records were among the records destroyed.]
I also have collected information on the children of Eli Cary (based on
census records unless noted otherwise):
Robert and Mary Cary had children (all b. OH):
Martha M. b. 1845
Samuel T. b. 1846
John T. b. 1848
George R. b. 1851
Robert S. b. 1853
Samuel and Anna (Fogle) Cary had children:

(see Cherie Logan's on-line database -- there is a link to it on
the Sangamon Co., ILGenWeb Project site)
Louis (or Lewis) b. 1856 IL

Hi Cynthia and other Cary researchers,
I have not gotten the impression from the listowners that they do not
want breakthroughs and connections to be sent to the lists -- in fact I
believe the opposite is true. The answers are just as valuable (or more
so) than the questions and sending them to the list makes them
accessible to everyone through the mailing list archives. Besides, I
think it makes the listowner feel good knowing their list is helping (as
a listowner myself, I know that's how it makes me feel).
Anyway, I also wanted to let everyone know that my recent post
regarding my gr-gr-grandmother, Mary Ellen (Cary) was answered and I
received some additional information to follow up on (which should take
me all the way back to the immigrant to MD, Thomas Cary) as well as
e-mail addys for two more people to contact. I haven't yet finished
putting together a new compilation using the information I've received
and when I do, I'll post it to the list.

You can probably trace your Winans back to Huntington, NY (Long Island).

Thank you for getting back to me. Some of the Winans moved from the
Elizabeth, NJ, area to upstate New York. I think my Carey ancestors are
related to the Winans who stayed behind in NJ because they were
intermarried with them and moved West with them. We've never been able to

the Dutchess County connection is one I hadn't thought of before so I'll

I agree with your assessment except the unwilling to share business. I'm not
concerned that I haven't gotten a response to my query. It's to be expected.
I'm concerned that some lists seem to want only queries posted and all real
breakthroughs/connections to be posted only to individuals. Those lists
frustrate me. I don't know, even now after at least a year, if the Cary list
is one of those.
I know that some of my Carey ancestors were very closed mouth. Perhaps that
is the trait that is being exhibited here.

I submitted a request for information about Elihu Carey a couple days ago. He was born 1768 and died 1845 in Orange County, New York. Maybe adding the childrens' names will help--Nathan H., Elihu B., William P., John B., Squire W., Amelia (my ancestor), Catherine, Elizabeth, Lucinda, Philena.

Cynthia,
I haven't seen a Joseph Cary listed that I can remember. I have tried to
pay attention to the names because I never know when one might be a brother
etc. My William was born in Tn. According to the 1870 census of Henderson
Co. his father and mother were born in N C. I will try to keep my eyes open
for a Joseph but it just doesn't ring a bell.

In response to your post, Van Davis GARY was married to Francis Elizabeth
DOOLEY. Unfortunately, so far I have been unable to find any info on
Francis. They were married Feb 10, 1826. Van Davis GARY was born Dec 29,
1806 in Bus River, Newberry Co., SC but was buried in Hart Co., GA as was
Frances L. DOOLEY. There could possibly be a connection here. I am assuming
that Van Davis GARY was named for his maternal grandfather whose name was
Van DAVIS married to Susannah CARY. Please e-mail me, maybe we have some
info that we can share that would be helpful for both of us.

I love the concept of the L-lists. I mainly lurk on this list because I do
not feel I have anything solid to contribute. I lurk so I can look for any
connection between my grandmother & her
(Tull/Harrington/Weeks/Fuller/Caley/Patterson) ancestors and the American
poetess sisters Alice and Phoebe Cary. My grandmother is a published poet,
and her biographies reference a relationship between her and the Cary
sisters, but I have not been able to document it.

Fellow CARY Listers,
There have been some posts on this list that read something like:
"I haven't posted any query because I haven't seen the answer to my
query." (my paraphrase)
Does this make sense?
In my world, you have to ask the question before you get the answer.
"I posted my query, and nobody ever sent me anything!"
Well, either nobody on the list had the answer or the query was not well-
formed. (I do not buy this "unwilling to share" business.) The remedy
to the first problem is to repost the query at some decent interval,
because membership on the list changes over time. The remedy to the
second problem is to write better queries.
There is an excellent, humorous guide to writing queries at
<http://www.rootsweb.com/~surnames/goodbad>.
If you are not getting the desired results from your queries, I would
strongly recommend this site. If you already know how to write queries,
this is good for a chuckle.
Please remember, it may take *years* to get an answer. It took me
three years to find the father-in-law of Armenius CARY. This took
multiple postings on three surname lists, postings on two or three
county GenWeb sites, and copious off-line research in the censuses, land
records, and county histories. You have to keep on keeping on while you
are waiting for the answer to your query.
Happy hunting!
Susan M.
Charles,
I haven't followed your posts before this one so I don't know if this will help but both Carey and Winans names are found in Dutchess County, New York . You might look up the book on John Cary (Massachusetts) or Lisa's website. At least two or three of his descendants made their way to Dutchess County, one being John, Francis, Samuel, Joseph. I'm been away for the day so excuse if this information has already been posted.

I'm curious what other information you might have on either of these
people. I have a lot of Carey and Winans ancestors whose lines are
intertwined in Miami county, Ohio. This is the first time on this list I've
seen anybody mention anybody who seems to be remotely related to me.

I don't have a direct relationship with Henderson Co, TN. My Cary's were in
Washington Co (E TN). But there were a lot of them in the time period you
refer to. The father of your William would have been in TN at about the same
time that my Joseph (b. 1799) came. Have you seen him on the census records?
Was your William born in TN or VA. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to

I've identified the following as possible parents for Joseph. They were on

Sarah Cary Charlott Co., VA

Hello everyone,
My Car(e)y connection is through my gr-gr-grandmother, Mary Ellen
(Cary) Johnston Blair (b. in DE 1834) lived in Monroe Co., IL where she
married James T. Johnston. After his death (which was about 1864), she
moved the familly to Sangamon Co., IL where some of her brothers had
already moved. She married a man with the surname Blair (her son,
Samuel Blair was born in IL in 1868). I don't know what Mary Ellen's
father's name was (it may have been Eli or Elijah), but her mother's
name was Sarah and she was born around 1799 in DE.
Here is what I have so far for the parents of ?? and Sarah Cary, all
born in DE (all years given are approximate):
Robert b. 1820 m. Mary 1844
Samuel b. 1824 m. Anna FOGLE 1849
Thomas b. 1827 m. Fanny 1849
James b. 1830 m. Sarah 1850
Comfort b. 1833
Mary Ellen b. 1834 m. James T. JOHNSTON
I could use more information on the Cary family that lived in Sussex
County, DE as that is where I think Mary Ellen was born.
Abby Balderama

The search for William and Garrett Cary's ancestors has
proved troublesomeand we cannot at this time, take the
family back further than 1827.
There was an immigrant, Miles Cary, born in bristol,
Gloucestershire, England in 1622. He was the son of John
Cary and Alice Hobson Cary. In 1646, after arriving in the
colonies, he married Ann Taylor, born ca. 1646 in Warwick,
Virginia. Anne's father was Captain Thomas Taylor. Miles
and Ann had a large family. One of their son's was named
William, born in1657. this particular William married Martha
Scarbrook in1682, and they in turn had a son named William,
born in 1700.
William married a Judith Jones in 1724 and died in 1742.
Although the connection has not yet been proved, this
may be the family from whom William and Garrett are
decended.
But three generations have to be definitely proved to be
certain.
Can any body help ? I would more than appreciate it. And
thank you now and again when,,,,,,
God be with you
