My great grandfather was William Arthur Carey who married Jemima Howard.
Any information would be appreciated.

I am looking for information on William Carey born circa 1804 in Vermont. The
earliest information on William I have was that he was listed in the 1830
census in NYS - Jefferson Co., town of Antwerp. William was married to Irene
Huntley. They had a son named Foster Carey who was born 1828. I found
William in the 1850 census in LeRay, Jefferson Co. NY. Don't have any other
information. Interested in learning more about William, such as where in
Vermont he was born, who his parents were, when and where he died, etc. Any
information on William and/or his family would be appreciated.
Thank you.
Athough I don think I can help with your names Chuck, have you ever checked
to see if your Careys originated from Ireland? There were an awful lot that
came fromm Kilkenny and most of them seem to have emigrated.
Just a thought.

Charles,
You are not the only one that spells it CAREY. And the only reason I know
that for sure, is that is how it is spelled on my Phebe J. CAREY's husband's
second marriage register as a former spouse. Phebe J. CAREY was b. abt 1837
in Michigan, according to 1860 & 1870 census. She m. Charles S. Brown abt 1855
in Michigan, Kalamazoo area. They homesteaded in Webster County, Nebraska in
1880. We presume she died in Nebraska sometime before 1898, as that is when
Charles went back to Michigan and re-married. Have not been able to tie any
CAREY family in Michigan to our Phebe J.

Time for a ROLL CALL. It has been sometime since we have had one for
the CARY's and with 115 members on this list, it would be beneficial to
all. Please address your ROLL CALL e-mail to cary-l(a)rootweb.com
For those of you who don't know, people join the list all the time and may
or may not have seen when you posted your message before, therefore it is
helpful to periodically post what you are researching. Please tell the
members of the list the particular person/ancestor you are researching,
and/or your reason for being on the list. (Please note, you will receive 2
copies of this message, one from "the list", and one sent to you
personally)

Hi Folks,
I`ve traced my branch of the Car(e)y family back to the wedding of William
Cary to Elizabeth Elsey at Sibsey in 1775, Lincolnshire, England. William died
at Sibsey in 1822, from his age given at his burial he must have been born
about 1738. If anybody has a William born in the United Kingdom around that
time let me know.
One of William`s grandson`s Joseph Carey (my g g grandfather) was transported
to Western Australia in 1867. Another grandson and brother of Joseph, who was
called Henry was publicly hanged at Lincoln Castle in August 1859 (this was
the last public execution in Lincolnshire).

Answering up to the ROLL CALL with my Great Grandfather, William CARY/CAREY,
b. 1809 or 10 in County Mayo. His naturalization papers show the spelling as
CARY and indicate his emigration from Mayo via Sligo around 1829 or 30, ending
up in NY, USA in a small town on the river 15 miles south of Albany named
Coeymans, NY. The 1850 census shows him married to Margaret KILROY, also born
in Mayo around 1807, and also an Ann living with them, age 70, and I'm
presuming she was either Ann CARY/CAREY or Ann KILROY. There were also 5
children, Patrick, Robert, Richard, James, and Ann, all born in NY. In 1854
they moved to a small town in central Wisconsin named Aurora [later renamed
Auroraville] where they farmed and later grew cranberry's in the nearby marsh.
Have no idea how the CARY on the naturalization papers for William [although
he signed his name CAREY] continued as CARY on the 1850 USA census, and then
shows up on the 1860 USA census as CARY, yet his obituary in 1888 and all the
children go by CAREY and that is the name of the family to this day. No idea
where in Mayo he was from, nor what ship he sailed from Sligo, the date of his
departure from Ireland, the date of arrival in either Canada or the USA, the
port of arrival, etc.! Primarily seeking assistance with any clues to the
CARY/CAREY family[s] in County Mayo and any knowledge of what towns they lived
in there in the early 1800's, what church they attended, where ancestors might
be buried, or what they did to earn a living, either in Ireland or in
Coeymans, NY.
Any & all responses sincerely appreciated. Thanks for caring.
With all good wishes,
/S/

I am looking for the ancestors (or any information) of John D. Cary born Sept
8, 1844 in NC, married (1) Elizabeth Baker April 6, 1866 and (2) Katherine
(Kit) Harmon Feb. 14, 1892. John died Feb. 27, 1904 mostly likely in Hamblen
Co., TN.
John and Elizabeth had the following children:
1) Sherman born 1867 in Hawkins Co., TN, died 1952
2) Allice born 1872 in Hamblen Co., TN, died 1887
3) Abby Hale (called Hale as a child and Dock as an adult) born 1875, died
1949 (this is my grandfather).
John and Kit had 5 children, only two of whom lived to adulthood. One of these
children is still living. John died a few months prior to her birth. She knows
very little about John.
Elizabeth Baker died in 1891. Her parents were J.A. Baker and Eliza Couch.
They were married in Hillsborough, NC in 1842 but had moved to Hawkins Co., TN
by 1851 because this is where Elizabeth was born.
John married Kit Harmon in 1892. Kit was only 14 years old and John was 47.
Kit married a Dowdy after John's death.
I have information on most of John's descendants.

CARY-L members:
No Plymouth pilgrims or poets in my ancestry! I can only trace my CAREY
line back to George CAREY, b 1759? in NJ?, d 1846 in OH. He migrated from
the Elizabeth, NJ, area to the Miami valley of OH in 1800-1810 along with a
lot of other NJ families such as WINANS, CLARK, CLAWSON, HATFIELD, FRAZEE,
MARSH. We don't know anything about his parents; he's supposed to have
worked on the Miami Canal as a stone mason. His wife was Phebe CLARK (b
1765? in NJ, d 1850 in OH), daughter of David CLARK and Sarah WINANS. All
the CAREYs to whom I'm related insist that CAREY is the correct spelling of
their name. I've been on this list for over a year and still haven't heard
from anybody who seems to be related. If you're "out there", let me hear
from you!
