INFORMATION ON JAMES CARWILE IS AS FOLLOWS:
(2) James CARWILE (son of Zachariah CARWILE) born 07 Nov 1775 in Virginia and
died after 1820 in Indiana. His wifes name was unknown at the time the book
was printed. Her name was Susannah RALSTON and they were married in Fountain
Co, Indiana on 25 Mar 1828.
On 16 Aug 1858, Zachariah CARWILE, Jr. , filed a petition in the office of the
Treasurer for Southe Carolina for a continuation of his father's Revolutionary
War Pension. In this petition, he stated that all of his brothers and sisters
had died with the exception of his sister Rebecca HANNAH, and his brother
James CARWILE. He stated that they had moved westward; that Rebecca had not
been heard from in twenty years; and that James had not been heard from in
thirty years.
It is believed that James CARWILE migrated from South Carolina with a group
who became early settlers in Indiana. The Indiana Territory was formed from
the Northwest Territory in 1800, and lands were surveyed in 1802 and 1803.
Settlers began to enter their claims and build cabins by 1804. The earliest
pioneers of the Whitewater Valley (now Franklin County) were form Laurens
County, South Carolina, and were called "The Carolina Colony". As families
from other sections of the country joined the original pioneers, new counties
were formed. Three Commissioners were appointed for the new Franklin County,
and the first Court was held on 01 Feb 1811. To provide revenue, the first
tax list ws prepared in 1811, which ontained the ames of many Revolutionary
War Soldiers, or sons of soldiers. James CARWILE was among the names on this
tax list, and it is thought that he accompanied the group from Laurens County
when they journeyed to Indiana. He had relatives who resided in Laurens
County at that time, and he may have remained in that area when his parents
moved to other points in South Carolina.
The family of James CARWILE was enumerated in the 1820 Federal Census For
Franklin County, Indiana as follows:
2 males under 10 years of age
1 Male 10-16
1 Male 16-18
1 Male 16-26
1 Male 26-45 (James CARWILE!!!!)
2 Females under 10 years
1 Female 26-45 (Wife of James CARWILE)
Other families from South Carolina were neighbors of Mr. CARWILE when this
census was taken. Nothing further is known of him after 1820, and he was not
found in Federal Censuses for Franklin Co, Indiana, following this date.
Information supplied by a correspondent (to the books author) and other
records indiacates that one son of James CARWILE was a resident of Wap3llo Co,
Iowa, for a number of years and died in that county. What has been learned of
this son is included in this compilation. Also, there lived in Wapello Co.
Charles S. CARWILE and E. L. CARWILE. It is possible they may have been
children of James, but this has not been definitely established. Apparently,
E. L. CARWILE died in 1859, as a claim against the estate was allowed in the
Wapello County Court (Probate Court) on 16 Jun 1859, and Charles S. CARWILE
was administrator of said estate.
