CARWILE

Post Office from June 30, 1894 to April 15, 1905
Named for James D. Carwile, early day resident.
The ONLY James D. CARWILE I can find is; James Dudley CARWILE (15 Aug
1852--1908). James Dudley "Dud" CARWILE was the son of James Monroe CARWILE
(21 Jun 1820--23 Jul 1883) of Level Land, Abbeville Co, SC. James Monroe was
the son of Josiah CARWILE (21 Dec 1788--1 Apr 1841) of Abbeville Co, SC.
Josiah CARWILE was the son of Revolutionary War Soldier Zachariah CARWILE (11
Sep 1750 Goochland Co, VA--4 Aug 1841 Abbeville Co, SC).
James Dudley CARWILE is listed on pages 222, 241, 242, 245, and 275 of the
book "A History of the Callaham and Carwile Families" by Anna Deihls Callahan
1976.
According to the book: James Dudley CARWILE was reared on his parents farm
near Level Land, in Abbeville Co, SC, and his first school days were at Union
Academy. On 20 Oct 1863 he participated in an "Exhibition" at the Academy,
his subject being "Earthly Contrasts and Changes". He was said to have been
a very handsome man, with gentlemanly manners, and has been referred to as a
"Prince of a politician".
James Dudley CARWILE was in Cass County, Texas in 1873 when he was visited for
a time by his brother Lawrence Sabastian CARWILE. Lawrence became homesick
and returned to Abbeville Co, SC.
James Dudley CARWILE assisted his uncle, Ransom Allan Brooks, with his farm
and sawmill operations near Douglasville, in Cass County, Texas; worked in a
pharmacy in Atlanta, Texas; was associated with a real estate business in Fort
Worth; and was a "drummer", traveling over the rough roads of early Texas by
horse and buggy. It is said that during many months, he would cover as many
as a thousand miles selling his wares. Mr. CARWILE was a member of the House
of Representatives from Cass Co., Texas in the 1890's
It is obvious that James Dudley CARWILE owned real estate in in Alfafa County,
Oklahoma Territory for a short period of time.
James Dudley CARWILE was never married although he was very popular with the
young ladies, and is said to have had many romances. On one occasion his
mother made a trip from Abbeville Co, SC to Texas to encourage him to marry
his cousin (Mary Brooks). James Dudley CARWILE died while visiting his
brother Jefferson Davis CARWILE at his home near Atlanta, Cass County, Texas.
He is buried in Douglasville Cemetery, Douglasville, Cass County, Texas.
If anyone has information on ANOTHER James D. CARWILE in Oklahoma at this time
please contact me and correct my assertion that the James D. CARWILE I am
writing about is NOT the correct person.
I hope this information is of some help to someone researching the CARWILE
family.
