For those of you who are interested; I am sending the UPDATED information I
have on Jacob Newton CARWILE: [1841--1914] I just received his 14 Page
Pension Application File; which dates from 1893 to 1914.
Jacob Newton CARWILE served in Company M, 5th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry, USA
during the Civil War. He enlisted on 03 Sep 1862 at Chamois, MO for "3 years
or during the war". His Pension Record states that he was released or
mustered out of service on 11 Aug 1865 at Nashville, TN on one sheet and on
another it has him as HONORABLY DISCHARGED at Clinton, Iowa on the 11th of
August 1865.
Jacob Newton CARWILE was injured in Feb or March of 1863 at Waverly, Tennessee
when his horse fell on him and injured his hip and back. It was October 1863
before he could resume 'Light Duty" with his Company according to the Pension
Application.
They usually send the soldiers Service Record with his Pension Record BUT they
didn't send it with Jacob's record. I am going to order Jacob's Military
Record tomorrow. It takes about 8 weeks to get an answer. In the meantime
I will also order his Units Regimental History. These should fill in the
gaps on this service in the Civil War.
Jacob gives his date of birth as 09 October 1837 on one sheet and 09 Oct 1838
on another. On both he states he was born in Illinois!!! This does not
agree with his age which when subtracted from the date of Pension Application
always makes him born in 1841 which corresponds with him being 9 years of age
in 1850 Census. His description at enlistment was as follows: Height, 5ft -
6in; complexion Fair; color of eyes, blue; color of hair, chestnut;
occupation, farmer. Jacob signed with an "X" which may explain the
discrepancy of dates!!!
