3. Peter CARWILE: 1805 -- 16 April 1862 (My GG_Grandfather)
Peter is named as child of William in 1851 Virginia Court Proceeding and
1850 Census in Pulaski Co, KY shows Peter as father of William who was 18
years old in 1850.
Peter CARWILE serviced in the Civil War (UNION) as a Private in Captain
Richardson's Company, 19th Regiment of Kentucky Volunteers, USA. His
military record shows that he was admitted to the Regimental Hospital in Somerset,
Kentucky suffering from "Chronic Diarrhia" and died on 16 April 1862. He
most likely died from eating tainted meat, which was common during the
Civil War. There is no record of where Peter CARWILE is buried in Pulaski Co,
KY.
IRONICALLY: Peter's son William CARWILE serving in Confederate Cavalry
was captured in Somerset, KY on 30 March 1863 during the Battle of Dutton's
Hill (within five miles of his family living in Somerset, KY at the time.)
4. William Zachariah CARWILE: 1832 -- 1899 (My Great-grandfather)
1850 Census of Pulaski Co, KY shows William as 18 years old in household
of Peter CARWILE.
1860 Census of Jefferson Co, TN with wife Isabella and 10 year old girl
named Mary GANN.
1870 Census of Jefferson Co, TN with wife "Izzy"
1880 Census in Marshall County, TN with wife Jane and John 5; Hanna and
Cordelia age 3.
Marriage License in Marshall Co, TN dated 12 FEB 1874
Died quietly in 1899 while sitting on his bed talking to his wife Jane.
William enlisted as a Private in Co G, Walker's Battalion, Thomas' Legion
NC troops on 24 September 1862 at Dandridge, Tennessee (CSA). He was later
transferred to Co H, 1st (Carter's) Regiment TN Cavalry, CSA about November
1862 and served there until the end of the Civil War. William Z. CARWILE
was captured on 30 March 1863 during the Battle of Dutton's Hill near
Somerset, Pulaski Co, KY. He spent 62 days as a POW and his record shows that
he was admitted to NO. 15, U.S.A. General Hospital at Louisville, KY on 30
April 1863 suffering from MEASLES. He was in the hospital for 12 days. He
was in a Prisoner Exchange on 31 May 1863 at City Point, VA. Feeding and
caring for prisoners in the Civil War was a low priority. When exchanged
William was immediately placed in the Confederate General Hospital,
Petersburg, VA as follows: Complaint: Debilitas; Admitted: 31 May 1863; Returned
to Duty: 23 June 1863: Remarks: paroled Prisoner. The Confederate
Cavalryman had to furnish his own horse or be transferred to the Infantry.
William somehow obtained a horse and served with his unit until the end of the
Civil War. His unit was in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia when the war
ended; rather than surrender they simply disbanded and made it home the best
way they could.
After William's death in 1899 his wife Jane PEARSON applied for a Widow's
Pension on 13 May 1899 with Frank K. WISE and John Henry SARDIN as
witnesses. WISE and SARDIN had served with William in 1st (CARTER'S) Regiment TN
Cavalry, CSA; SARDIN in Co H, and WISE in Company K. Jane CARWILE listed
her total worth at $58.00; consisting of one (1) horse at $25.00; one (1) cow
at $12.00; four (4) hogs at $6.00; and household and kitchen furniture
valued at $15.00, for a total of $58.00. Her pension was contested in OCT
1914 because she had said William served in Co, K, Alabama Cavalry. This was
corrected and her pension was restored.
