I found a Joseph CARVEN 20 M blacksmith PA in Year: 1850
County: Philadelphia Township: Frankford Borough State: Pennsylvania
Roll: M432_824 Page: 171
This may mean that the family & James is in this area.

There are two CARVIN families in 1840 PA (neither family had an 8 year
old male) and none in 1840 NJ.
