I have finally found some Carvins. Maybe with the new
information, these Carvins may ring a bell with some of you?
Beginning with my mother:
Ruth Alberta Carvin
9 May 1918 to 23 Jan 1991 Philly
married Robert Edwards Prideaux
Rev. Walter Henry Carvin
18 Feb 1894 to 8 Sept 1987 Philly
married Rose Mae Straw
Children:
Ruth, & two sons living
Walter Henry Carvin
cr. 1867 Williamstown, Gloucester, NJ
died b4 1947
married Mary (May) B. Langham
Children: Elsie, Viola & Walter
James Carvin
Cr. 1831 Williamstown, Gloucester, NJ
married Keziah Tice
Children: Anna K., Frank, Fanny, & Walter
I found the last two on the 1920 census of Philadelphia.
There is a family story that 2 Carvins were taken prisoner in
the War for Independence, but I do not have names.
I understand most all my Carvins were from New Jersey, later Philly. They were Baptist.
(This seemed to be very important to them)
My grandfather said he was Scot ancestry. Is Carvin Scot? Everytime I look, it is said
Carvin is Irish.
A Carvin moved from NJ to
Roanoke, Virginia in the 1700s. The city built their water
reservoir on land they purchased from the Carvin family.
Carvin's Cove Reservoir. Some of the unusual words my
grandfather used were old Scot words. Information on these
appreciated. General Carvin information appreciated too.
Thank you,
Susan Roberts
Virginia
PS Mike; thank you for your info on Scots-Irish. That completly matches what I have been
told, but completely forgot about until I read your post.
Funny. All my Carvins are still staunch Baptists and really have a time with me being
Presbyterian!!!!!
