Message Board Post:
I've listed much of this info on this line in this thread before.
According to Vinalhaven Vital Records and Clifford Nickels Carver, Israel and Margaret did
NOT have a son named George Allen Carver. [Fox Island is the old name for Vinalhaven.] I
searched the entire index of the book and did not find a George Carver, Allen Carver,
George Allen Carver or Allen George Carver. I also have The Carver Family of New England:
Robert Carver of Marshfield and his Descendants, by Clifford Nickels Carver, Litt. B.
Privately Printed, 1935. No George Allen Carver. There's an Allen Carver on p. 85 of
Carver's book, born in the mid-1700s, son of Jonathan Carver of Taunton and
Bridgewater. There is a George Albert Carver born 6 Oct 1836 [p 123 in Carver's book,
probably the ship named George A. Carver mentioned on p 145 was named for him]. Neither
book lists a George Allen Carver or any other name combination born in, near, about 1819.
Israel Carver [born 2 November 1740, Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, son of
Caleb Carver & Abigail Sherman] and Margaret Sherman [born 1 November 1745,
Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, daughter of Elisha Sherman and Lydia Walker]
are my ancestors through their daughter, Lydia Carver, who married her first cousin, Caleb
Carver, son of Capt. Caleb Carver and Abigail Damon.
Vital Records of Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine Prior to 1892, Elizabeth M. Mosher,
trans., Picton Press, Rockport, Maine, 1994, p.28 lists the following offspring:
Ziba Carver, born 25 December 1764, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine; married Sarah Norton
20 November 1791, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine [p. 36 in above cited VVR book]
Lydia Carver, born 5 January 1767, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine, married [ca 1837; where
is not recorded] Caleb Carver, born 1762, Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, son
of Capt. Caleb Carver & Abigail Damon
Israel [2nd/Jr.] born 9 January 1769, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine; married [m. 20
January 1792, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine] Susanna Jewell [born 19 May 1770,
Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine]
Elisha [Elishua] Carver, born 23 December 1775, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine; married
[m. 31 December 1798, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine] Rebecca King [born 14 August 1775,
Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine]
Lucy Thomas Carver, born 28 October 1786, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine [Unknown why she
has the middle name of Thomas]
Joseph Carver, born 17 April 1789, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine
Charles Carver, born 21 February 1791, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine
There is a double descendancy in the Sherman and Doty lines through the third Caleb Carver
and Lydia Carver.
William Sherman (2nd) married Desiré Doty (daughter of Edward Doty of the Mayflower and
Faith Clark); Desiré married three times, had children by all three husbands, and outlived
all three men.
William and Desiré's children were: Hannah, Elizabeth, William, Patience, Experience,
Ebenezer. [Daughter, Experience, married Miles Standish, son of Alexander Standish by his
first wife, Sarah Alden. Alexander Standish was Desiré's third husband.]
Ebenezer married Margaret Decrow [dau of Valentine Decrow and Martha Bourne]. Their
children were:
Eleazer [Illegitimate], Rachel, William, Elizabeth, Joseph, Abigail, Ebenezer, Robert,
John, Elisha.
Abigail Sherman m. Caleb Carver (1st) - their eldest son, Capt. Caleb Carver (2nd) married
Abigail Damon (this latter couple ended up in New Brunswick when Capt. Caleb and son
Melzar were proscribed and banished from MA as Loyalists in 1778; I have a copy of Capt.
Caleb's will and two deeds where he's listed in NB records).
Elisha Sherman [bro of Abigail] m. Lydia Walker - their daughter, Margaret, married Israel
Carver [bro of Capt. Caleb]
Capt. Caleb Carver and Abigail's son, Caleb Carver (3rd) married Lydia Carver,
daughter of Israel Carver (1st) & Margaret Sherman. [There are other Calebs and
Israels in this line because nephews were named for uncles and grandsons for grandfathers
or fathers of the same name.]
Yes..., I know. One needs a pedigree chart to follow all that.
The fact remains that IF there is a George Allen Carver b. ca 1819 in Maine, he isn't
among the known records for this particular Carver family. Going by repeated names
doesn't add much to any info since most of the names are repeated endlessly in
sibling, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece, cousin lineages all up and down the family tree.
There are a LOT of Carvers in Maine and many of them connect to Robert Carver of
Marshfield, MA..., but I do not have the Vital Records books for those communities.
I'd suggest contacting Picton Press, Rockland, ME for other Vital Records books with
info in them, some of which might list the Carver you're looking for. If not, then
you need to look in another state and another line of Carvers.

Best Wishes in your search.
