I had a nice long detailed message but this system is a little tempermental so if it does
not go through just right. Everything gets thrown away. It teaches one to be brief.
In short. We are definitely talking about the same Pleasant. My great grandmother's
account is something her daughter typed in the 1930's and lists brothers Ishmael,
Thomas and Pleasant in Vigo County Indiana in the 1840's. Thomas apparently made good
apple cider. Grandmother's account of the next generation of Ishmael's family
(that none of us were particularly aware of) turned out to be entirely accurate and her
version of Pleasant's generation accords with all of the facts we have so far. It is
probable that Jesse Carver (though he was older and settled in a different place) was a
brother. He had a son with the unusual and characteristic name Ishmael who ended up in
Harrison Cy Indiana. It is also likely that Nancy Carver Little (m. John Little in Vigo
Cy 1836) and Elizabeth Carver McMains (m. John McMains in Montgomery Cy Indiana 1832 I
think).
John McMains and his brother Andrew settled in Hickory Cy Missouri in 1842 and John went
to Mahaska County Iowa from there in ca 1848. About 1848 Ishmael Carver and probably John
Little (brother in law) went from Vigo Cy Indiana to Hickory Cy Missouri (which was an
exceedingly small and out of the way county so this was not coincidence). Ishmael
Carver's son Isaac married Mary Neal in 1850 and Andrew McMains and Mary's two
brothers John D and William Neal went to Sevier Arkansas in 1848. Ishmael Carver, John
Neal Sr and Isaac Carver had all followed them by 1854. Ishmael Carver died in Arkansas,
ostensibly because of the Civil War in 1862 and the rest soon after went to Atascosa
County Texas whence they went to Wilson Cy Texas.
John McMains was joined in Iowa by his father Abraham about 1850. Abraham had been trying
to settle in Illinois but for whatever reason gave it up and collected his family and
friends from back in Indiana and went to Mahaska County. These friends and family
included Thomas Carver (and wife Sarah Wells) and Pleasant Carver (and wife Mahala
Bodehamer) and the Bodenhamers. Pleasant settled in Union Twp and Thomas and the McMains
settled in Pleasant Grove. John McMains died in 1872 and I have not dfound what happened
to Elzabeth. Would like to see her 1880 census record. Thomas and Sarah after 1880 went
to northwest Kansas and we do not know what happened to them and Pleasant was still on his
farm in Union Twp in 1900.
Nancy Little was in Hickory Cy Missouri until sometime between 1860 and 1880. And I have
not learned about Jesse.
There was a family in Virginia or NC with a Jerrel in the 1700's that was probably
related but I am going to have to dig it up again.
This family was divided by the Civil War. Ishmael is said to have headed south because he
preferred the confederate view of things. This was not the position of his brothers.
Ishmael died in 1862 - some family traditions says at the hands of Jayhawker (or
Bushwhacker for the southerners) like raiding parties that preyed on the farmers of both
sides in the Ozark and eastern Kansas areas. Be that as it may, Isham Stinnett, husband
of Ishmael's eldest daughter (Pleasant's neice) Elizabeth who was also living in
Arkansas apparently kept his silence during his father in law's lifetime but after he
was dead leaving his wife and first son in Arkansas went North to his wife's people in
Mahaska Iowa (Pleasant and Thomas Carver) and there joined the Union forces, eventually
fighting at Vicksburg. He returned home remained in Arkansas the rest of his life
-Elizabeth died in the 1870's- and apparently his neighbors either understood or
respected the choice he had made. There remai!
ns a picture of him in his Union uniform and his wife Elizabeth (the oldest of the Carver
pictures I have though I daresay pictures must remain somehwere of Pleasant. Pleasant was
a farmer but he was literate and reasonably well off and son Jerrel was an insurance
salesman and grandson Henry was a phsician in one of the local towns. So you can bet
pictures of him remain somewhere.)
I hope some of the above is of use. I suspect what you really need is listing and
information about Pleasant's children. I may perhaps be able to provide some
information based on census and some based on what others have posted (there is a lot on
these brothers at genforum). I will try to post it here. If you can give me your e-mail
address, there are one or two things I should send you. My e-mail is

I have been researching Jesse and wife Mary Hornbeck, married in 1830 in Fountain
county, Indiana. It is my understanding that his father's name was Pleasant. Jesse
had several children. One was Ishmael, one was Pleasant and one was Thomas. Are we
talking about the same line? If so, are you saying that Pleasant (hardin county) is
Jesse's father or his brother? Does anyone know this Pleasant's birth or death
dates?
I live in Kentucky and drive through Hardin county all the time. (usually on the weekends)
If anyone can give me more details on where to look in Hardin county, I would be open to
doing some reseach in that area if it would help.
