Message Board Post:
Seeking information on two men named Barton Carver, both residing in St. Lawrence County,
NY between 1810 and 1920.
Older Barton
In 1800 census he is in Richfield, Otsego County, NY, surrounded by descendents of Joseph
Carver II, who was originally from Bridgewater, MA, and after that Scituate, RI. These
descendents include Joseph’s son Oliver Carver (m Mary Perkins), Oliver’s daughters
Elizabeth Carver (m Stephen Wescott) and Rhoda Carver (m Pardon Potter) as well as
Joseph’s son, Captain Joseph Carver (m Abigail Rounds) and Abigail’s father Bertram
Rounds. Barton seems the right age to be Oliver’s son, but I have found no documentation
of this relationship. He is probably too old to be Captain Joseph’s son.
In 1803 he came to De Kalb, along with Jonathan Haskins and many others, part of band of
early settlers moving from Richfield to De Kalb (per book “History of St. Lawrence
County”.) 1812, listed as a private in Benedect’s regiment, NY Militia. In 1830 he is
living near another Oliver Carver in De Kalb. This Oliver appears to be born 1801, m Lois
Burnett, d 1853 in Illinois. I see this older Barton for the last time in the 1840 De
Kalb, St. Lawrence County, NY census.
Possible burial – Kendrew Cemetery, “Barton Carver, age 72” no birth or death dates.
Possible spouse – Esther Weir, after 1824. (This per a couple of online gedcoms with no
obvious source documentation.) Esther is buried in Kendrew Cemetery next to (probably) 3rd
husband, John Messer.
Younger Barton
In 1860 another Barton Carver shows up in St. Lawrence census. Per cemetery stone, he was
born April 21, 1837. In 1860 he is living next door to Jonathan Haskins (junior, I
believe), with Hiram Haskins and family. 1862-64, served in the Civil war. Shot through
the right arm. In subsequent censuses,1870-1920, he’s married to Amelia Burton, has 2
daughters – Cary and Winona, in 1920 is living w/Winona who is married to an Emerson
Allen. Dies Nov 27, 1922. Buried w/Amelia in Hillcrest Cemetery in Oswegatchie.
