Can anyone help with the genealogy of Hans (Johannes) Michel Gerber who came into
Philadelphia on the Ship Edinburgh in 1751?
There are three Michael Gerber/Carvers who interest us researchers who are searching for
the Michael Gerber/Carver who lived in Bucks/Northampton PA and died in NC. One came into
Phila in 1727, one in 1734 on ship Hope (wife Anna age 22 and dau Anna age 6 mos - Michael
was 27) one that came into Phila in 1751 and another listed in a PA/German newspaper who
came in 1755. Gerber is an occupational name in Germany meaning "tanner".
Germany adopted surnames in the 1300s. Naturally, all tanners are not related so it is
not likely that all of these Gerbers are related -- possible not certainly not probable.
Some researchers have attached the 1734 Michael to the Michael in NC who also married Anna
M. Schwarz. Can anyone help with the proof of this connection between the 1734 Michael
Gerber and the Michael Gerber who married Anna M. Schwarz in NC?
All help, suggestions and "proof" will really be appreciated. Thank you.
