Message Board Post:
My research interest is Sarah E. BOWMAN (abt 1843 NJ) who was married three times. First
to Unknown, Second to a Mr. CARVER, Third to Daniel V. ASAY (m. btw 1866-1870).
Mr. CARVER & Sarah E. had three sons. Mr. CARVER probably died btw 1866-1870 and at
least two of the boys were raised by their stepfather, Daniel V. ASAY. I don't know
who raised the third son.
In her obit of 1896 Sarah E. is survived by two CARVER sons -- William CARVER of
Philadelphia (unk dob/pob) and Joseph V. CARVER (abt 1864 NJ) of Red Bank (Shrewbury),
Monmouth County, NJ. The other son, John A. (abt 1859 NJ wasn't mentioned in the obit
so he must have died before her.
John A. & Joseph V. are listed in the 1870 Census for Shrewsbury, Monmouth, New Jersey
with Daniel & Sarah ASAY(spelled *ACY*) and they are listed under the *ACY* last
name.
I don't know if John A., who died before 1896, had a wife or children.
I believe Joseph V. married Ann ASHMORE, a widow with children, and lived in Red Bank,
Monmouth, NJ.
William was not listed with Daniel & Sarah *ACY* in 1870 so I believe he may have been
older than John A. by at least a year and perhaps was an apprentice somewhere. I don't
know his wife or children.
I've been unable to find Mr. CARVER (I don't know his given name) or Sarah E.
CARVER anywhere, though I would expect them be in the 1860 Census since John A. was born
abt 1859.
If anyone knows of any CARVER connection to Sarah E. BOWMAN, or to any ASAY's in NJ,
please contact me. We, like many families, have a story of a Native American ancestor and
it's been said in my family that it's through Sarah E. BOWMAN. I'd like to
find out one way or another.
I did find, and forgot to bookmark, unfortunately, a NJ census with a CARVER boy and an
ASHMORE boy living with a JACKSON man who was the grandfather of one of them. I will try
to find that one again.
Thank you.
