"The Civil War records list a George Carver who enlisted on the 15th of June, 1861 in
Vinalhaven."
IF all the births were recorded on Vinalhaven, then George wasn't born there even if
he did live there at the time he enlisted.
I'd say find out if he was born on one of the other islands nearby. Mosher has
transcribed North Haven's vital records. I know there are other nearby islands, too,
and that some of them had Carvers on the islands. George isn't a common name in my
lineage, so I don't know which one it might be.
For that late a period in time (Civil War era), there should be some US census data you
could check for Knox County, too.
