Hello,
I have some information on my Carver/Tomlinson family line and would like to expand on it.
I only have what was typed up at a family reunion back in 1961. I would love to hear
from anyone who has any additional information. My email is beansm(a)yahoo.com
CARVER ANCESTRY
John Carver came to this country from Hartfordshire, England on the ship “Welcome” with
William Penn, sailing from Deal, England on September 11, 1682. They arrived on October
28, the same year. His three (3) brothers William, Joseph, and Jacob came at about the
same time on the ship “Samson”. John took up, by patent, from William Penn, 690 acres of
land in the North-eastern part of Byberry, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania along the
Poquessing Creek. It included the site of the old homestead. It remained in the family
for five (5) generations, descending from father to son, all of whom were named John,
until 1864. He was a malster by profession. John Carver married Mary Lane at the Priory
of St. Albans, England prior to coming to this country.
The brothers William, Joseph and Jacob came from Sussex, England. They also took up a
tract of land in Byberry and dug a cave in which they lived until a house was built. This
property remained in the family for six generations. Joseph Carver married and moved to
North Carolina near Carvers Creek. Jacob died unmarried and was buried behind the barn.
William Carver, our ancestor, married Joan Kinsey 11 month 14, 1689 (old style) January at
Middletown Monthly Meeting of Friends (now Langhorne, Pennsylvania). After her death in
1723, he married a widow, Grace Paxson Carter at Falls Meeting, Pennsylvania. They had
one (1) child named Hannah. William Carver died at Byberry in May, 1736. His widow
Grace, died in 1737.
William Carver Jr. son of William and Joan Kinsey Carver, married Elizabeth Walmsley on
December 28, 1719. She was the daughter of Henry and Mary Searle Walmsley. Mary Searle
Walmsley was the daughter of Francis Searle. Henry Walmsley was the younger son of Thomas
Sr. and Elizabeth Walmsley. They came from Yorkshire, England on the ship “Welcome” with
William Penn and settled in Burlington, New Jersey. Henry had an older brother, Thomas
Jr. Thomas Walmsley Sr. died two weeks after arriving in Burlington, New Jersey. He was
a miller and had brought equipment to operate a mill from England. His widow remarried
and she, along with her sons, established a mill along the Neshaminy in the vicinity of
Hulmeville, Pennsylvania. On December 16, 1735 Thomas Jr. and Mary Walmsley conveyed to
William Jr. and Elizabeth Carver 235 acres and 22 perches of land in Buckingham Township,
Bucks County, Pennsylvania a little way easterly of Forest Grove, Pennsylvania. !
We are descendants of John and William Carver Sr. who were broghers, and descendants of
Henry and Thomas Jr. Walmsley, who also were brothers. They all were of the Quaker
faith.
