I have always considered my maiden name of McCarty as Scotch-Irish, even
though my father always said it was "Irish". I understand many
"Scotch-Irish" Americans called themselves either "Irish" or
Scottish"
or even "English", so that doesn't prove much. But my McCartys had been
protestant as long as I have found records for them, and they fit the
profile of those Scots who had been forced into Ulster, then forced by
impossible living conditions to emigrate to the colonies.
Scottish clan societies such as MacArthur and Campbell claim McCartys as
one of their clan. In the past I read that the name had been associated
with the Farquharsons and the Macintoshes. This makes its sound
authentically Scottish, to me.
Recently some persons on the internet wrote things like, "the name
McCarty is Irish" etc. Can any of you tell me if you had ideas about
whether the name is Scottish in origin or not? I know there are many
McCartys in Ireland today, especially in Cork. Does the name itself
tell us anything of its nationality? I thought people on this list
might come in and say their ideas about this, and it might help us all.
