Pete: Has your name always been spelt Cavill? I remember working with a guy
in Cape Town ho was originally from Ireland and his first name was spelt
Caval? I guess there can be a multitude of spellings depending on
education, dialect & country, eh?
Coral
G'day Coral, I have seen something like 50 ways of spelling my surname;
including those in my own Cavill line. Caval is but one of them. The
multitude of accents in Great Britain(can change slightly every 20 miles)
coupled with the inability to read and write, led to what is known as
"phonetic spellings" for so many pre 1900 born people; my Grandmother Eliza
Cavill(nee: Cartwright) being one of them. The scribe wrote down the surname
as he or she heard it, and/or how he or she had seen it written down before.
Cavill as such, is the more modern and accepted way of spelling this
surname, and Cavell(debatable if they are or were one and the same surnamed
family) is the other spelling, with the occasional Caville. This surname
originated from a place name in East Yorkshire, England; and is listed in
the Domesday Book.
Pete Cavill
This time of internet access has truly opened doors for us much faster than
before. It's exciting to see our family trees take shape not only through
our own efforts, but by family we'd never even dreamt of before meeting them
on-line.
Coral
I'm told that next to pornography, genealogy is the most popular
internet/email subject, which says something about the popularity & growth
of family historians & researchers, doesn't it, Coral? In this day and age
of families drifting apart, it's good to know that there are those of us who
are trying to bring their ancestral family(s) back together again.
