Thanks for the response Coral Anna. Yes,
Ancestry.com has been a major partner in my
research for a long while. I hesitate to think what my travel expenses would have been
without it.
I had not thought of a Union. hmmm. Splendid idea. Thank you.
I've stepped lightly into the Cartwrights of Staffordshire, but glory be there are a
lot of them. With no way to connect any of them to mine ... it's been daunting. The
furthest back "fact" that I have is GGGgrandfather Solomon Cartwright. 1841
census states he was 46 years (no, they did not do the rounding thing for this family.
why??? don't know) and born somewhere other than Cheshire. I sent for his death
certificate (1850) which at least does not refute that. So I have Solomon Cartwright
born 1795 somewhere in England but not Cheshire, married to Hannah Binns in 1813 at
Manchester Cathedral. Hannah might have been from Yorkshire but that's not yet
confirmed. Now Solomon was a good guy ... he baptized his children. Between that and
birth registrations and the transcript of an interview with his eldest son .... in the
States ... I've got the family after 1800 pretty well located and tracked. Before
Solomon, nothing. I guess it could be worse ... I could be looking for someone named
Jones in Wales.
I'm off to the internet to see what I can find about textile unions. There's lots
of history out there, but maybe in the last few years someone has transcribed some lists
or ledgers. Wouldn't that be grand?
thanks again, Kathleen

Kathleen:
Have you tried Ancestry.com? Wasn't there some kind of weavers/spinners
"union" (I know that's not the correct terminology for them then) that they
might have belonged to? Also, Staffordshire? It appears my ancestors did a lot of to-ing
& fro-ing into Staffs during their lifetimes.
Sigh, you've probably tried all those already! I do wish you well.
kind regards
Coral Anna

If I could find a group of Cartwrights to whom mine are even tenuously connected, I'd
love to have/attend a reunion. But at this point it's only a case of "surname in
common". My tree comes to a total dead end among the weavers and spinners of
Cheshire/Lancs in the early 1800's. Can't find where they came from; Can't
even logically connect them to neighbors with the same surname who are probably cousins of
some sort. My twig on the tree is from those who emigrated to the US, fallout from the
Cotton Famine, mostly. Sigh. I keep reading the boards hoping to find someone searching
from the other side of the brick wall.

Going to hitch your star with ours?
There are so many Cartwrights from so many origins & I guess they were
all "blue collar" workers in the beginning of time, so I would wonder
how we'd ever get them together!
My lot...we manage to keep in touch - well the younger generation - via
internet. I have cousins in Zimbabwe, London, France, New Zealand and
Ozland...oh, and some here in the states as well. Most of the "older"
generation have gone the way of all dust by now, so a lot of our ties to
family & "the old country" are not as tight as they used to be.

Sorry Pete, not ever heard of that for the Cartwrights.
Coral Foster
Maybe your Cartwright family & relatives might think of having such a
reunion, Coral?
