Hi,
My Cartwright family was from Scio, Allegany County, New York (1830's)?and then moved
to Poynette, Columbia County, Wisconsin (1850's)?then onto Seattle, Washington in the
1940's. My father did do the DNA testing but we don't have any close Cartwright
matches - as we need more Cartwrights to test - so if you are interested you can purchase
the test thru Ancestry .com.

Congratulations on starting so young in searching your roots. You will find
most of us are old people, well, old in age, young at heart. I wish I had
started at your age, there are a whole lot of stories I missed out on
ignoring my family tree. I was 44 when I realized nobody knew who my gg
grandfather was for sure, so I set out to find him.
Here's what you do. Call your cousins and tell them what you are doing. Find
out what they know first.
Get on the site for the Mormon Church: has the 1880 census and submitted
info by members, you would be surprised,
you don't have to be a Mormon to find family there.

Check this site;
http://genforum.genealogy.com/cartwright/
and this one
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.cartwright/mb.ashx
so far the sites mentioned are FREE. Check to see if anyone has already
researched your family.
If you are starting your search a good source to have is census records.
HeritageQuest is offered free to many library members, check and see if your
NY library participates in
something like this. HeritageQuest does not have 1830-40 and 1850, but does
have all the other years.
1850 and after, US census records contain the names, age ,sex of everyone
living with the head of household, before that
just the name of head of household and general ages and sex of the children
and wives.
Sites that charge:
This site will cost you but it is very good source,
Ancestry.com
Has ALL census records and lots of other things as well, it is about as
complete a research site there is, they may be offering a weeks free
membership to try
it out.
Footnote.com Rev War Records and other interesting stuff, but no census
records. Also offer a 7 day trial.
Godfrey.com old 19th century newspapers, and more news papers but you have
to pay. No census records per se. Lots of links to free sites.
Paper of Record-also newspapers
Newspaper Archives-also newspapers and can be accessed thru Godfrey for
a
price.
There are other pay for information sites, but I have not used them.

Subject: [CARTWRIGHT] New York Cartwright's
Hello Everyone:
First off my name is Patrick Richard Cartwright Jr I was born
7/18/1983, son of Patrick Richard Cartwright Sr and Jennie Mae
Richardson.
My grandfather was Ralph Cartwright he died when my father was
young, he commited suicide in Owego New York, and was married to
Lillian Lunn, they had my father, his brother Ralph (Hoss), and a
daughter Betty Cartwright.
I was told that my grandfather lived in Chicago at one point, his
mother was Mary Lantz.
My dad said he was always told that he hand an uncle in Colorado.
This is all the info that I have on my family on my father's side,
no one knows anything. I was hoping that someone might be able to
help me piece things together so that I can find some of my
family.
Thank you,
Patrick Cartwright Jr.
