Hello to all,
Isn't there any Cartwrights who lived in New England or NY in the
late 1790s to early 1800s?
I have a Sarah Cartwright b about 1794 who married a James Richmond I
think in NY in about 1816.
Thanks

Pete, I have details of my line of Cartwright back to 1771 (William
Cartwright), starting in north yorkshire and ending up in durham.
with the
exception of John who emigrated to Austraila all remained pretty

to north east england. I can't trace any further back than 1771 as
there
are too many possible William Cartwrights in surrounding areas to
be certain
which is my ancestor.

G'day Eddie, Perhaps the most frustrating thing about our
ancestors, is that
they usually only gave their kids one forename; and more often than
not,
after their own forename or other family forenames. The frustation is
increased if the surname is not unusual or uncommon. I got back so
far with
my Cavill line, and like you, wasn't sure who was the next
generation back;
again, one forename, and more John Cavills that you could poke a
stick at.
In the absence of any other records or known records, I made an
educated
guess; and until a "kin" Cavill proves otherwise, that's how my
Cavill line
stays.
