To all re thread on Education found this in a local publication
on Allerthorpe the one near Pocklington East Yorks.
William WESTOBY's Charity Board reads as follows:
"1765 William BELL gave a house for the poor. This is when the Poor House
Charities started.~"
~"27May 1818 John HART of Allerthorpe gave by his will sume of 2 hundred
pounds to the Rev James ADDISON,Thomas STEPHENSON,Robert SANDERSON and
James POWELL A Trust to pay the interest to A schoolmaster for teaching so
many poor children residing at Allerthorpe as his trustees shall think
proper."
We know from 1743 an old woman taught at Allerthorpe but there was no
record of a school at that time. Under John Harts will 9 pounds (interest
from the 200) annually paid for nine poor pupils to be taugh. In 1823 John
WHITTAKER was Headmaster and in 1840 Charles JENNINGS. There then follow
details of how the school became Church of England school 1872 to 1875
following on from the 1870 Act which I will add if folk want more ?
