Will Book HIK, pg.179; p. 1:
I, CHRISTOPHER CARTWRIGHT, of the county of Pasquotank and province of
North Carolina........................I do give and disposive of as
follows. Item, I do leave to my loving wife, ANN CARTWRIGHT, the use of
the plantation and land whereon I now live, during her natural life.
Item, I give and bequeath to my two children, viz, JOSEPH and ANN
CARTWRIGHT, the aforesaid plantation and land after the death of my wife
aforesaid, equally to be divided between them, my son JOSEPH to have his
first choice, to them and their heirs and assigns forever. Item, I give
and bequeath to my son JOSEPH CARTWRIGHT, one negro named Rippens; also
two cows, two calves, two ewes and lamb, two sows and pigs, and all my
joiner's tools, and one horse and gun, and feather bed and furniture,
all to be delivered when he arrives at age or marriage. Item, I give and
bequeath to my daughter ANN CARTWRIGHT, one negro boy named James, also
two cows, two calves, two ewes and lambs, and one feather bed and
furniture, all to be delivered when she arrives at age or at her
marriage. I also leave the use of all of my estate, both real and
personnal, to my well beloved wife during her natural life, and at her
decease to be equally divided between my aforesaid children, JOSEPH and
ANN. And lastly I nominate and appoint my well beloved wife ANN
CARTWRIGHT, and Thomas Gaskins, my Executors to this my last Will and
testament, revoking and disannulling all other wills by me made,
allowing this to be my last. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my
hand and seal this the 13th day of March 1760.

Will was proven in open court at the July term of 1760 by the oaths of
John Burgess and William Simpson, then appeared Ann Cartwright,
Executrix and was duly qualified. Thomas Taylor, Clerk
