Will Book HIK, pg. 11 Pasquotank Co., NC by Laura Willis pg. 9:
In the name of God, Amen. I, Thomas Cartwright of Pasquotank County, and
provence of North Carolina, being very sick and weak in body, but of
sound mind and perfect memory, and knowing the uncertainty of this life,
do make and ordain this my last Will and testament in manner and form,
that is to say. I give and commend my soul to God that gave it, hoping
through Christ for a pardon of all my sins past; and my body to the
earth to be decently buried according to the discretion of my Executors
hereafter mentioned. Item, I give and bequeath to my son, Jabub
Cartwright, son of Alce Cartwright, wife of my son William Cartwright,
one three year old heifer and one stock of bees, and five shillings
sterling to cut him out of all my lands and moveable estate because it
is thought that he was no begotten of my son William Cartwright. Item, I
give and bequeath to my son, Robert Cartwright and his heirs, a portion
of the manor plantation land I now live on. And to my son, Isaac
Cartwright and his heirs the other part by a division ready made between
them, that is at a sweet gum in the head of a branch straight through
the land by a line of marked trees, and my wearing clothes to be divided
between them, the above Robert and Isaac. Item, I give and bequeath to
my granddauther, Rhody Cartwright, the plantation whereon my son William
Cartwright did live by a division ready made between she and my son
Isaac, and to the heirs, but if she dies without heir, to be equally
divided between my son Robert and Isaac. Item, I give and bequeath unto
my grandson Daniel Cartwright, and to his heirs, fifty acres more or
less, over the mill where his father did live. Item, I give and bequeath
to my granddaughter, Rhody Cartwright one cow and one heifer and calf,
them and their increase and one swarm of bees, and the first swarm to be
given to John Cartwright, son of Alce. I likewise give and bequeath to
John Cartwright, son of Alce Cartwright, one four-year-old heifer and
her increase. Item, I give and bequeath unto my three daughters, Sarah,
William [sic] and James [sic] Cartwright, and Eliza Cartwright, all the
rest of my estate, within and without, or mentioned. I likewise make
and ordain my son Robert Cartwright and my son Isaac, Executors of this
my last Will and testament, hereby revoking and disannualling all other
Wills heretofore made by me. In witness whereof, I have hereunto put my
hand and seal this 17th day of December one thousand seven hundred and
sixty-one.
