Lucy
I am glad to see an Amherst Cartwright mentioned on this list. Thought I
would send what I have on Justinian.
I descend from Matthew of Maryland and firmly believe the Amherst
Cartwrights,Justinian, Peter, John etc descend from that line also.
Justinian does not seem to witness to many of the deeds and marriages of the
others, but he is always around.
There are no wills or church records I have found to prove this lineage, no
definite proof, however, I will list some of my reasons.
1) John Cartwright in a purchase of land in Amherst Co Va, Feb 16,1770 deed
book c, p 41 states he is from the "Province of Maryland"
2)CD #206, Gen Records:Maryland Probate Records, 1674-1774.
There is mention of a Justinian Cartwright as follows:
in 1764 a Justinian Cartwright is included in a list of debts due the estate
of James Mills of StMarysCo dated April 30, 1764. Liber 87 Folios 43 to
55. also listed are a Matt. Cartwright, John Cartwright and a bunch of
Tippets.
3)Peter, John, William, Matthew and Jesse were all names used in
Matthews line in Md.
4)The Rev Peter, son of Peter the Rev War soldier, was said to have spoken
under his breath in Dutch?German? when he read the bible to himself. Which
you would expect from someone in a line from Holland? The Rev Peter also
states in his biography that he was "born on the James River"
5) The Peter of Md who died 1751 lived on a property in Maryland called
Norwood. Peter Cartwright (Rev War) sold his land to Wm Cabell per the book
"Cabell and his
Kin". There is an "Old Norwood Plantation" sign NE of Amherst (in Nelson
Co
I believe) which is right adjacent to the road (Union Hill) that leads to
land that is currently identified as once being owned by Wm Cabell. I find
the use of the Norwood name quite interesting, and just another pointer as
to the origin of this line. Close to the confluence of the Tye and James
Rivers in Va, north of the James and east of the Tye River there is a town
called Norwood, and the main road which passes by the plantation sign is
also called Norwood.
6)Counties of Todd and Christian, Kentucky : historical and biographical
Chicago: F.A. Battey, 1884, 706 pgs.
p186 Justinian Cartwright first settler of Todd Co, came from Maryland and
of Scotch Irish descent.
So there is no absolute proof, but everything seems to point to the
conclusion that these
Cartwrights of Amherst descend from Peter Cartwright d 1751 of Maryland.
Things I would like to know about Justinian:
Where did the name Carl come from, it just wasn't used in the family in Md
up to that time, or afterwards.
Did he die in Dec or Sept 27 of 1832. I have conflicting dates.
Things I think I know:
Given the dates of his service, and the unit he was in, he possibly wintered
at Valley Forge. At least a us govt page has his name and unit listed as
being there.
Although issued a land warrant for Rev war, don't think he ever lived on or
sold any of the land warrants he was awarded?
Besides Justinian/Jesse there was also another Jesse Cartwright from Va that
served in the Rev War.
Things I do know.
The old notion that Justinian was the father of the Reverend Peter has been
disproved.
Justinian married first Frances Gillespie abt 1777,then Justinian was marr
by a Rev Wilcox to his second wife Mary Harris Nov 24,1830 when he,
Justinian, was 78. This Wilcox? could be Edmund Wilcox? step son to Peter
Cartwright Sr
and half brother to the Rev Peter.

Subject: [CARTWRIGHT] Illinois Cartwright
John Jay Crittenden Cartwright ( b.03 May 1842, Kentucky; d. 05 Jan
1882, Illinois) was sheriff of Thompsonville, Illinois and was shot and
killed during his term of office.
He married Drucilla Mildred Creasey 03 Jan 1869 and they had 6
children: Finis Ellsworth Cartwright, John Henry Cartwright, Joseph
Sidney Cartwright ( my Grandfather), Aldora Adeline Cartwright, Margaret
Elizabeth Cartwright and Milton Thomas Cartwright. John's father was
Henry Lee Cartwright and his father was Justinian (Jesse) Carl
Cartwright (Justinian came to KY from Amherst County, VA by 1781 when
appointed surveyor by the court of Lincoln CO. He was also known as
Jesse Cartwright (disposition of his son James Allen Cartwright) and
continued to survey for many years. Land transfers show that he was a
resident of Davidson County NC. ( Tennessee) in 1788 and survey books
that he came to the area that would become Caldwell County, Kentucky in
1798. He was issued Military Land Warrant-2901 by the Land Office of
the Commonwealth of VA for 7 years of service in the Continental Line.
He applied for a Revolutionary War pension on April 27, 1818.
"Personally appeared in court, Justinian a citizen of this County and
made oath that he enlisted on Feb. 26, 1776 under Captain Samuel J.
Cabell of Morgan's Virginia Rifle Corps under the Continental
Establishment . . ." Caldwell CO order book C pg 224. He received this
pension #53031. Listed in the bounty land declaration of James Allen
Cartwright for himself and other heirs of Justinian. )
Let me know if any names ring a bell!
