Check on immigration records through Castle Garden. My Cartwrights came through there in
1869. The records are online. Start at
www.castlegarden.org<http://www.castlegarden.org/> . The site and info have been
updated and rearranged some, but that will get you going.

Hi Coral,
Oh so thats why I didn't have any luck on Ellis Island...
Thanks for all your good tips here, I didn't know where to start.
I appreciate your help!

You might want to check Brit records of members of Parliament for the
period prior to 1860. I haven't had a need to check that with my
research. Maybe someone else on this site could be of more help.
If a son was born in NY in 1860, presumably your William's father had
emigrated just prior to that...so, would he have come here in the 1850's
and as it was prior to the establishment of Ellis Island as a port of
entry - his paperwork would have been done by the State of New York.
That's as much as I know. Maybe if you don't have the father's name, it
would be good to start with the birth certificate for your William? It
might even give you the place of birth of the father & mother.
Good luck!

Sorry to just jump in here, but I wasnt' here to see all the messages.
Is anyone related to the Cartwright that was in Parliment?
All my grandma said was... they lived in England and he was in
Parliment.
Then a son came along and he was William Cartwright born about 1860 in
New York.
Then, William Cartwright married Maria and they had 7 kids and lived
in Joliet Illinois.
I'm trying to find out how to make the connection to Parliment?
Any ideas?
Thanks a lot
