You're welcome - how interesting that he was convinced not to go to
Africa. Where were they from in UK?

Coral,
My Grandfather, Sid Cartwright was a bricklayer by trade and he loved
to work his way across country. ( Once worked his way to California) My
brother has a letter his sister wrote to him trying to convince him to
not go to Africa. I guess it worked; he didn't go. Maybe he had a
reason to go other than to hunt the animals?
Your right, doors open and relatives appear! (sometimes literally at my
house)
Thanks for the note,
Lucy

Hello Lucy:
Sorry, my Cartwright's came from Nantwich, Cheshire and emigrated to
South Africa in 1826, so I'm afraid I'm of no use to you at all!!
I wish you luck in your search...it's amazing how someone, somewhere
will pick up on your message & will open a door for you (and maybe a
window too???!!)
Kind regards,
Coral Anna (Cartwright) Foster

Subject: [CARTWRIGHT] Illinois Cartwright
John Jay Crittenden Cartwright ( b.03 May 1842, Kentucky; d. 05 Jan
1882, Illinois) was sheriff of Thompsonville, Illinois and was shot
and killed during his term of office.
He married Drucilla Mildred Creasey 03 Jan 1869 and they had 6
children: Finis Ellsworth Cartwright, John Henry Cartwright, Joseph
Sidney Cartwright ( my Grandfather), Aldora Adeline Cartwright,
Margaret Elizabeth Cartwright and Milton Thomas Cartwright. John's
father was Henry Lee Cartwright and his father was Justinian (Jesse)
Carl Cartwright (Justinian came to KY from Amherst County, VA by 1781
when appointed surveyor by the court of Lincoln CO. He was also known
as Jesse Cartwright (disposition of his son James Allen Cartwright)
and continued to survey for many years. Land transfers show that he
was a resident of Davidson County NC. ( Tennessee) in 1788 and survey
books that he came to the area that would become Caldwell County,
Kentucky in 1798. He was issued Military Land Warrant-2901 by the
Land Office of the Commonwealth of VA for 7 years of service in the
Continental
Line.
He applied for a Revolutionary War pension on April 27, 1818.
"Personally appeared in court, Justinian a citizen of this County and
made oath that he enlisted on Feb. 26, 1776 under Captain Samuel J.
Cabell of Morgan's Virginia Rifle Corps under the Continental
Establishment . . ." Caldwell CO order book C pg 224. He received this
pension #53031. Listed in the bounty land declaration of James Allen
Cartwright for himself and other heirs of Justinian. ) Let me know if
any names ring a bell!
