Hello John, I am a daughter of a Cartwright and have been looking up my ancestors for awhile now. My great great grandfather was a William Cartwright also and I have traced him to Lincoln Co in 1850 where he was 18 and living with a Sarah who was 60+ and his new wife. Could this be the son of your William??? I am not able to locate the father or mother of my William.
Thanks for your help

Thanks,

Thank you, Peter, for the possibility of the Jewish connection. It makes sense and is worth pursuing. Solomon was diligent about having his children and grandchildren Christened (St Michael's Ashton-Under-Lyne) but that doesn't mean anything regarding his own background and ancestry. What a fascinating possibility!
In the greater Manchester area I have found another group of Cartwrights who also Christened their children at St Michael's and who have the same naming convention -- repeated uses of Abel and Benjamin and Elijah in the early 1800's. I've decided that the two or three lines are some sort of cousins but haven't been able to make any sort of actual connection. I keep hoping that someone from one line will show up as a witness at a death or wedding for someone on the other side. Nothing so far. Just separate trees that look similar.
My Cartwrights were settled in Lancashire/Cheshire and seemed to marry women from Yorkshire so that's where I have concentrated my search. I had hoped that Solomon's death certificate would say where he was born but it doesn't.
I hear that there's been a recent release of Workhouse records. My GGGrandfather Abel Cartwright died in the Ashton Workhouse (following a disabling stroke if I'm reading the death cert correctly) so I'm hoping for some more information there. But as to carrying backward from Solomon, I'm pretty much dead ended.
Good luck with your search. There are a huge number of Cartwright's in Texas. If you have a connection to the US, maybe it would be there.

I checked my notes and I can find no connection or logical search pattern
with your line, unless it's with Solomon himself. If your crew back in the
1700's has a penchant for biblical naming conventions and might have had a
Solomon among them ... I'd be forever greatful.

G'day Kathleen, This "biblical naming" occurred in my Cartwright family,
names like Levi, Samuel, Moses Samuel, Ruth and Selina; which led me to
believe that this family was originally of Jewish ancestry, knowing as I do,
that many European Jews fled to the UK and changed their surnames to common
British surnames in order to avoid further persecution. Years of research,
enquiries etc., led me nowhere, until finally, my late Uncle Peter
Cavill(his Mum was maiden-named Cartwright) confirmed that his Mum was of
Jewish descent.
My GG Grandfather, Samuel Cartwright, was born in Aston, Staffordshire,
England; which is a lot closer to your Manchester Cartwrights than my North
London Cartwrights, Kathleen.

G'day Listers, I would like to try and find out more about my beloved Nan Cavill's family ancestry & history.
She was born Eliza Cartwright in 1885 in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England; married Albert Cavill(1885-1950) in Enfield, North Middlesex'London in 1911, gave birth to 10 children(one being my Dad), and died in 1944.
Her parents were Levi & Sarah(South) Cartwright, and she had quite a few siblings.
>From what I know to date, this Cartwright line went from Aston in Staffordshire, to Paddington in London, to Hertford in Hertfordshire, and to Enfield in North Middlesex/London; where I was born in 1938.
I'd be delighted to find and make contact with any living descendant of this Cartwright line, however they now be so surnamed, and to share the information I have on this family.
Thank you,
Pete Cavill
