I noticed that John Cartmell ( the live one) mentioned Ireland today in a
message. Some of our old history mentions Nathaniel coming from Ireland.
Not wanting to be Irish if I don't have to, I posted the name on an Irish
list today and got back a couple of replies.
#1 from Surnames of Ireland by E. MacLysaght says: Cartmill-An English
toponymic found in counties of Louth and Armagh since the early 14th
century. ( For those of us who don't speak Irish, I guess a topnymic is a
"place name").
#2 From David McDowell: "As a child, I used to get my school uniforms from
Cartmill's clothes shop in Glengormley, just north of Belfast. I think it
is still there."
#3 From K. Rummel: A tax valuation in the mid-1800's shows 6 Cartmill's in
the Armagh area and 12 Cartmell's.
From this brief survey, it would seem there have been
Cartmill/Cartmell's in
northern Ireland since the 14th century and some are
still there. This
would add credibility to those early histories that refer to Irish roots.
Does anyone have any real evidence of some of our US ancestors coming from
Ireland?
