Again I will refer to another researcher's book on CARTMILL.
p.63-74
Henry (John, Henry)
"Henry CARTMILL born abt 1769 probably in Botetourt Co VA ided in 1824 in
Kanawha Co, VA. Mar. Fevb 4,1799 in Botetourt Co VA by Rev. Elijah VAUSANDT to
Isabella BOGAN< who died in late 1831 in Kanawha Co VA dau of Andrew BOGAN.
The will of Andrew BOGAN follows this page.
The record of the marriage bond of Henry and Isabella is in the Co Clerk;s
Office, Botetourt Co , Fincastle, VA. The marriage occurred on the same day
that the bond was filed on. Andrew BOGAN, father of Isabella , was the witness
and security to the marriage."
The next page is the will of Andrew BOGAN. If you would like me to send it I
can.
The next page is list of Tithables, Personal Proberty Tax, VA Kanawha Co . for
Henry, John , Thomas, James, David, John Jr, Robert, Isabella, 1806-1835
The next page gives the 1820 census of Henry and Isabella and then lists their
children: Virginia, Robert, John B. (this is my line), David, James Henry,
Elvira, Ann E.,
In summery of this chapter the researcher tells how the Civil War affected the
lives of their decendants. The final paragraph is as follows:
"So, the situation for the descendents of Henry and Isabella in the Civil War,
was: 1)one grandson for the Union, his service resulting in blindness, severe
health problems, inability to afterwards earn a living. 2) two grandsons died,
serving for the Confedracy. 3) one son, ae 59 yr, served for the union,
discharged with ruined health, suffering worse and worse financial problems
after service. Two sons of this son served for the Union, one dying in
service, the other contracting seriously impaired health therein.4)one
grandson, serving for the Union, escaped health impairment therein. 5) two
grandsons served the Confederacy, their own families and their father's family
continuously facing unhappy and disturbing environment and living during the
Civil War and after the Civil War. In summary, serving for the Union in the
Civil War: 1 son and 4 grandsons; for the Confederacy, 4 grandsons. All
descended from Henry and Isabell CARTMILL. One son and 8 grandsons of Henry
and Isabell, fighting against one another, in the Civil War. Again, it is good
that Henry and Isabell did not live to see the above events unfold and the
effects on their descendents. In addition to the above 9, two CARMILLs, 1st
cousins of John and his sisters, Virginia and Elvira were Capt. Simon Morgan
Cartmill M.D., son of David. Simon served for the Union. James Perry Cartmill
, son of William served for the confederacy."
I would be glad to send any of the info inbetween the ones I have just quoted
if you are interested. It has alot of the children and families listed.
Hope this helps someone, and if you can relate to this family than we are
cousins.
