Because there are so many Henry Cartmills in Botetourt Co, VA it has been
difficult to find the parents of the Henry Cartmill who married Isabella
Bogan daughter of Andrew Bogan. We know that Henry and Isabella moved to
Kanawha Co, VA(WV) soon after 1800. I have rather scant information which
leads me to believe that this Henry may have been the son of John Cartmill,
son of Henry. This John Cartmill live in Botetourt, served in Rev. War
and was later the sheriff of Botetourt, moved to TN in about 1811 and lived
in Bedford Co, TN near to Shelbyville.
Henry and Isabella Cartmill of Kanawha Co, VA made depositions in 1821 in
the pension application of William Freehold(er) of Gallia Co, OH. In his
deposition Henry Cartmill said that Andrew Bogan had told him that William
Freehold had served in the Rev. War. Freehold was from Frederick Co and
Rochingham Co, VA before moving to Gallia Co, OH. Freehold may have been
related to Isabella as she remembered him in Frederick Co, VA at the end of
the Rev. War, and Henry Cartmill relates that his father-in-law, Andrew
Bogan, told him that Freehold had served.
A Henry Cartmill served in the War of 1812 from Kanawha Co, VA. Is this
the same Henry who was married to Isabella Bogan?
It is very likely that each of the children of Henry Cartmill who died in
1786 in Boterourt Co, VA had a son named Henry. Differentiating among
them, identifying wives and children has taken up a good deal of my time in
the past. I hope this List and its participants will help to define the
relationships among these Cartmills. Bill
