Last Will and Testament of Nancy Cartmel
"I Nancy Cartmel of the County of Logan and State of Illinois, having property to
bequeath and knowing the uncertainty of life and the certainty forewith and being now in
my right mind and capable of making disposition of my property, do bequeath, as follows to
wit:To Eliza Rigdon, my bed,bedding and saddle, and if at my death,after all my expenses
have been defrayed, there should be over one hundred dollars left Eliza Rigdon to have one
hundred dollars, and the remainder to be divided equally between my children that may be
living at my decease, and further, that David D. James, be and is appointed my executor.
Given under my hand and seal this 10th day of August A.D. 1857

I do solemly swear that this writing contains the true last will and testament of the
within named Nancy Cartmel, deceased, so far as I know or believe and that I'll will
and truly execute the same in paying first the debts and then the legacies mentioned
therein, as far as her goods and chattels will thereinto extend and the law charge me, and
that I will make a true and perfect inventory for such goods and chattels rights and
credits as may come to my hands or knowledge belonging to the estate of the said deceased
and under a fair and just account of my executorship when thereinto required by law, to
the best of my knowledge and abilities. So help me God.

Know all men by the presence that we David D, James, Mordicai James and George W. James of
the County of Logan and State of Illinois, are held and firm as bound unto the people of
the State of Illinois, in the final sum of Eight Hundred dollars current money of the
Untited States, which payment will and truly to be made, we and each of us bind ourselves,
our heirs, executors and administrators jointly, severely and firmly to these presents
witness our hands and seals, this 15th day of January A.D. 1858
The Condition of the above obligation is such, that is the above bound in David D, James
Executor of the last will and testament of Nancy Cartmel, deceased, do make, or cause to
be made a true and perfect inventoryof all and singular the goods and chattels, rights and
credits, lands teniments and , hereritaments, and the rents and profits issueing out of
the same, of the said deceased, which have or shall come to the hands, possession or
knowledge of the said David D. James, or into the possession of any other person for him:
and the same, so made, do exhibit in the County Court for the said County of Logan , as
required by law, and also make and render a fair and just account of his actings and
doings, as such executor, to said Court, when thereinto lawfully required: and to well and
truly fulfil the dites enjoined in him in and by the said Will: and shall more over pay
and deliver to the persons entitled thereto all the legacies, and bequests contained in
said Will, so far !
as the Estate of forsaid testator will thereunto extend according to the value there of
and as the law shall charge him; and shall in geberal, do all other acts which may from
time to time be required of him by law then this obligation to be said; otherwise to
remain in full force and virtue

To all to whom their presents shall come: Greeting
Know Ye that whereas Nancy Cartmel, late of the County of Logan and the State of Illinois
died on or about 4th day of December A.D. 1857, and having as it is said, made and
published her last will and testament, a copy whereof is hereunto annexed, leaving at the
time of death property in this State that may be lost or destroyed, or diminished in value
if speedy care not be taken of the same, and in as much as it appears that David D. James
has been appointed executor by in and said last will and testament, to execute the same,
and to the end that said property may be preserved for those who shall appear to have a
legal right or interest therein and that said will maybe executed according to the request
of the said testator, we do hereby authorize him the said David D. James, as such executor
to collect and secure all and singular the goods and chattels rights and credits, which
were of the said Nancy Cartmel, at the time of her decease, in whosoever hands or
possesion the same!
may be found in this State: and well and truly to perform all such duties as may be
required enjoined upon him by the said will, so far as these shall be properly: and in
general do and perform all other acts which are now or may hereafter be required of him by
law.
