Dear list;
We have been looking into the families that ended up in White County,
IL on or before 1837, when Margaret marries
We remembered that someone had written a couple years ago and said
that their ancestor told the story of how he was in the Civil War and
the family had to move to Mississippi while he served. Also we have
another unaccounted for Thomas who died in St. Louis abt. 1816. I
found that piece before I had gotten anywhere trying to find any of my
Cartmill's and so it is here in a note book somewhere, the wife was
going to court to try and get the estate settled. So I think you are
very close to right, but I am not willing to give up on that family
yet. We may have an answer in the Robert who is serving in the Navy
and stationed in New Orleans. We can safely assume that he is not one
of the kids from Madison or Wilson. As we know that their Robert
served under Jackson, whether he did or not it doesn't matter, he
obviously served in the infantry. I think every families boy either
served with Jackson or Lee and all the northern boys served with Grant
or Sherman. I don't know why we have to fictionalize our ancestors,
they had more spirit and courage just to survive than the mightiest
Army. Sorry that is my soapbox sneaking in there. In 1850 we have
Margaret the mother living with John b. Abt. 1825 in MS. Margaret (b.
abt. 1816 TN is married 4 OCT. 1837 White County, IL with her family
(oldest child being 11 (b. abt.1839). Brother James (b. abt 1825)is
married. So we are probably looking at more than one of of Capt.
John's sons as the father (if indeed he is) of this family. He
certainly had three males the right ages. We will have to try and find
out if one or two are missing later on. The family whose father went
to MS or LA to fight the war could have gone for the War of 1812 which
saw mighty battles in and around New Orleans and not as we assumed at
the time of the Civil war. That would make the ages of these four
children right:
1850 White County, IL
Pg. 355B
James Cartmill wm age 25 b. Miss (abt. 1825)
Manerva wf age 21 b. LA (NEE: Brocket m/ 26 Mar. 1846)
William wm age 4 b. IL
Isabelle wf age 1 b. IL
Able wm age 20 b. Miss (brother to James.)
Catherine Brocket wf age 57 b. TN (abt. 1797)
Melancy wf age 17 b. IL
Pg. 342A
John Cartmill wm age 25 b. Miss
Margaret wf age 53 b, TN (abt. 1753)
Pg. 342A
James Wicker wm age 37 b. KY
Margaret wf age 34 b. TN (NEE: Cartmill)
Thomas wm age 11 b. IL
David wm age 10 b. IL
Elizabeth wf age 9 b. IL
John C. wm age 8 b. IL
James wm age 5 b. IL
Jeremiah B. wm age 4 b. IL
William S. wm age 1 b. IL
Did not locate James and family 1860 White CO. His wife shows up on
the 1870 with just the children and as a widow. Her youngest child is
7, so James died or divorced between 1863 and 1870. Civil War maybe?
John is still there, Maragret the mother is gone.
We also have another TN family out by 1870:
Jackson Missouri 1870 Pg. 30A
line 9
C. Cartmell wf age 70 b. TN
line 10
(listed in index as James but it sure looks like John to me)
John or James Cartmell wm age 46 b. TN abt. 1824
Mary wf age 30 b. MO. abt. 1840
William wm age 9 b. MO abt. 1861
Anna wf age 12 b. MO abt. 1858
Martha wf age 5 b. MO abt. 1865
Emma wf age 3 b. MO. abt. 1868
Jackson County covers Kansas City, right there on the river but the
city itself was not included on the CD I have. We know this cannot be
of the same father as we already have a James and John. Note: also
this could have been the family that had to move for the civil war, no
children between 61-65.
If any of you can tell us where and who this family is we would sure
appreciate any help. We have gathered much information but do not
want to put it up until we get some of these mysteries solved. The
families above were listed as Cartmills down the line I am not sure
that is significate or not.
Thank you for any help you can give.
