Dear Ms. Kaelin,
I am doing family history research, and I can get back to one Thomas Chester who married a
Sarah Cartmell
of Chester Co. PA. in the late 1700's. She was a Quaker, and he was not. She was
disinherited by her
father (one Samuel Cartmell, if my research is correct). Thomas and Sarah joined the
group headed by
Joshua Hite that left the Chester area and settled the Shenandoah Valley of VA. They can
be found on
the Frederick Co. census records. However, I cannot go any farther back than that. I am
stumped.
I am searching Quaker records to see if I can find any references to Sarah or Samuel
Cartmell, and yours
is the first I have found. Do you have any information that might be useful? Do you know
if the Cartmell's
came in at Philadelphia, or New York? Do you know where they came from? I would suspect
England,
because of the number of Cartmell's located in England, but they might have been in
Holland, where many
of the dissenter's went because of persecution in England.
Any help you can give me would be most appreciated. Keep up the good work. Eventually we
will have
all of our families registered. As soon as I can be sure of my infor I plan to enter my
family. Good Hunting!
