Josephine,
First, thank you for sharing this.
I hope that you don't mind that I am posting this to the Cartmill list as I
think this is something everyone can help with. There are two or three
facts that play into this.
We have not had solid dates for the birthdates for this generation and rely
for the most part on guessing, using various facts to come as close as we
can. This obit probably pins Andrew down fairly well, although I have a
couple other obits that have proven to be dead wrong. We need more
research on this family. If he was born 1766, why do we not have children
before 1800, I mean that is a little late?
Nancy Brown and Andrew m/ 1795 Clark County, KY( making Andrew 29 if 1766
is correct)
Children of ANDREW CARTMILL and NANCY BROWN are:
2. i. WILLIAM WORRICK3 CARTMILL, b. November 28, 1800, Bath Co.,KY; d. July
16, 1880, Grundy Co., MO.
3. ii. LUCINDA M. CARTMILL, b. Abt. 1801, Bath Co. KY; d. Bef. 1830, Bath
Co. KY.
4. iii. JOHN M. CARTMILL, b. August 25, 1802, Bath Co. ,Kentucky; d. August
28, 1884, Walnut, Crawford Co.,KS.
iv. JAMES HARRISON CARTMILL, b. Abt. 1804, KY; d. 1839, Sangamon County,
IL; m. ELIZABETH DUREAL/ DUVAL, July 05, 1828, Bath Co,KY.
5. v. EVELINE CARTMILL, b. July 22, 1807, Bath Co,KY; d. May 06, 1845,
Sangamon Co.,IL.
6. vi. NANCY CARTMILL, b. August 11, 1810, KY; d. Aft. 1880.
7. vii. ELIZABETH CARTMILL, b. 1812, KY; d. Unknown, Mt Pulaski,IL.
8. viii. MARY ANN CARTMILL, b. 1816, Bath County, KY; d. Unknown.
9. ix. ANDREW J. CARTMILL, b. Abt. 1821, KY; d. October 20, 1856, Logan
County, Illinois.
He would have been 55 yrs old at the birth of his last child and while this
is certainly not unheard of, it is strange. As for Thomas and Mary we do
not have firm birthdates on them either and they could have been 10-15
years older than listed.
I think this is a good discussion subject and would like to hear from all
of you and especially those who are in this line and have researched
material on this family. Let us this to our advantage and get to the
bottom of this family.

Subject: Andrew Cartmell obit
SANGAMO JOURNAL, Springfield, IL, September 22, 1832 Andrew Cartmell
Died: At his residence in this county, on Wednesday, the 12th inst. Mr.
Andrew Cartmell, aged 66 years. Just before his death, he appeared to
be conscious of and remarked that his departure was at hand, that he
felt loath to leave his family, but that he felt no alarm as to death.
He breathed his last in peace. He left a large family and numerous
connections to deplore his loss. He was a kind father, an affectionate
husband and a good citizen.
His languishing head is at rest;
Its thinking and throbbing are over:
His quiet, immovable breast
Is heaved by affliction no more.
I found this in Springfield, IL last summer. It seems according to
this obit he would have been born in 1766 not 1776. What do you
think? Could he have been a son of Thomas from a first marriage. I am
having trouble with Andrew being son of Thomas and Mary Warwick. Let me
hear from you. Josephine Spatz
