Nathaniel Cartmell [sic] 0200-00-00-06-0
VII. Extracts from Shenandoah Valley Pioneers and Descendants (Thomas K.
Cartmell;1908)
[p.416]
The Cartmell name derives from "kert" (a camp or fortification) and "mell"
(a fell); originated in Northumberland, the township of Cartmell lies in
Lancashire, Cartmell Church dates to A.D. 677; the head of the family in
America was Nathaniel; a minor land grant was given in 1735 to Nathaniel's
widow and her sons Martin, Nathaniel, Nathan and Edward, and several
daughters whose names are not mentioned; a survey in 1737 locates the widow
Cartmell with her son Edward on a tract south of the Opequon Creek in
Frederick Co., in the vicinity of the Old Quaker Graveyard; Martin was on an
adjoining tract of 700 acres, these two tracts eventually became the family
estate "Homespun"; it appears that Nathaniel and Nathan were minors at this
time, as they were not mentioned as land holders - all surveys were in
Martin's name; two additional tracts near Middletown were owned by Edward.
Martin Cartmell's will, dated 1749, mentions his mother and his wife Esther,
wills his land to sons Nathan, Edward and Nathaniel; Nathan (son of Martin)
died unmarried in 1755, leaving his property to his brothers Edward and
Nathaniel; his mother Esther is still living at this date;
In 1747 Nathan Cartmell bought 200 acres "at the head of South Branch of
Opeckon" by Joist Hite's Corner from Nathaniel Thomas.
Nathaniel Cartmell Sr. died ca. 1765 "at an advanced age", leaving no will;
his son Nathaniel Jr. died in 1795, leaving the following children: Thomas,
Nathaniel, Nathan, John, Jacob, Elijah, Elizabeth, Sarah, Rachel, Mary,
Solomon; of these children:
Nathan and Jacob went to Kentucky before 1800
Elijah and John went to Ohio
Elizabeth married Dr. Michael Archdeacon
Sarah married James Cochran
Rachel married Thomas Crist
Mary married Nathaniel Willis
Nathaniel (III) married Paul Froman's daughter, was living at "Retirement"
in 1780 when his wife died.
Solomon married Miss Raife (or Ralph) and lived west of Homespun
Thomas, the oldest child was living at Greenfield Farm in 1770 with his wife
Ann Hite [T.K. Cartmell states that she may have been a daughter of Isaac
Hite Sr., of Long Meadows; however, he later cites a 1790 deed that mentions
Thomas Cartmell's wife as Anne, daughter of Joseph Hite, and says, "This
must be the Thomas that tradition says married a cousin of Dolly Madison."]
Thomas Cartmell's will, proved in 1808, mentions sons John, Thomas, William
Hite, Jacob, Nathaniel; unmarried daughter Eleanor, and married daughters
Rachel Nutt, Sarah Morris, and "Betsy, wife of John Lupton".

During the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863), the order from General
R.E. Lee to General James Longstreet directing Longstreet to support the
ill-fated charge of Pickett's men was delivered to Longstreet by Sgt. Robert
M. Cartmell of Lee's staff. Longstreet wrote on the back of the order "Too
late to execute" and sent Sgt. Cartmell back with it to Lee, who crumpled it
and threw it on the floor. Sgt. Cartmell retrieved it, smoothed it out and
preserved it.
Robert M. Cartmell was the son of Mordecai Bean Cartmell (a grandson of
Nathaniel Cartmell III) and his wife Eliza Campbell.

1682-1750 (Myers)
[p.325]
"Nathaniel Cartmill and wife Dorothy came from Ireland to Pennsylvania in
1685 and settled within the limits of the Newark Monthly Meeting. They had
at least two children: Martin, b. 1 Mo. 19, 1685, at sea on the voyage from
Ireland; and Thomas, b. 2 Mo. 29, 1689, disowned 12 Mo. 4, 1715 for marriage
out of Society (Records of Newark Mo. Mtg.). In 1689-90, Nathaniel Cartmill
and Timothy Atkinson were each granted 200 acres of land in the Manor of
Rockland, New Castle County, at a rent of one penny per acre, 'being
unwilling such good Husbandmen should leave the Government' (Minutes of the
Board of Property, Pennsylvania Archives, 2nd Series, XIX, 25). At Newark
Monthly Meeting, 7 Mo. 3, 1715, Nathaniel Cartmill was dealt with for
consenting to his son's marriage out of the Society; for this breach of
order he produced a satisfactory acknowledgement."

Dear Fellow Cartmill Researchers:
I have had to be away from the computer for about 5 days. There has been so
much posted to the CARTMILL rootsweb that I need to take some time to absorb
it all so that I can ask intelligent questions. It's good to see all of this
happening.
Just to re-introduce myself, my name is Carol Vass and I am descended from
Nathaniel CARTMELL/Dorothy POOLE? through a Hannah Cartmell, b. ca 1740/5 in
Frederick County Virginia. One of the things I enjoyed in reading all of the
recent postings were the names Paula and Dan. You two dear people helped me
find "my" Hannah Cartmell's connection to Nathaniel Cartmell and for that I am
eternally grateful.
I'm glad to be a participant in this endeavor. I just need some time to
absorb all of the information to see where it fits with me and how I can
contribute. I'm so glad that John Cartmell from England is part of this.
Also, I had to laugh at some of the postings with the repetition of names, ad
nauseum. I am part of a similar group researching a BERRY family in Augusta
Co, VA in 1700's and they use the same names over and over and over. It
drives us crazy. Of note, there is another Carol who is posting to this
rootsweb. I thought people were writing to me, but I don't think I am
connected to the "Henry", but to avoid confusion, I will sign myself as Carol
Lee.
Back with questions soon and hopefully will make a contribution. Thanks for
all of the information. Warm regards, Carol Lee <svass(a)aol.com>
Here is some info I received one time from John Lupton.
Dan'l
Here is a text version of an MS Word document I compiled a while back with
some of the Cartmell info I had collected. Hope you find it useful. There is
mention somewhere in it of two sons of Nathaniel Cartmell (II, although the
text refers to him as "Sr."), Nathan and Jacob who went to Kentucky. It
would seem likely that one of these brothers is the progenitor of your line
of Cartmells. If you can find out which one, please let me know, I'd be glad
to have the info.
Regards,
John

I saw you had 1685 birth for Martin Cartmell Carol and
you didn't know where you saw it from. I went digging
on one of my disks and this is what I found. From what
I have it came from the Book: Pioneers of Old Frederick County Virginia
I don't know who sent me this, but hope this will help
someone out there.

Pioneers of Old Frederick County Virginia
Martin Cartmell (the son of Nathaniel and Dorothy Cartmell) was born "19 JAN
1685 at sea on a voyage from Ireland." Another son, Thomas Cartmell, was born a
birthright member of the Newark Meeting (Quakers) on 29 FEB 1689. [58] The
Cartmells first lived in New Castle County, Delaware in the Brandywine Hundred
(Township).

Compiled by Herbert Standing, Friends Historical Library, Swarthmore College,
Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. Newark Monthly Meeting minutes, 1686-1739, pps.377-378
Martin was living in Cecil County, Maryland by 7 February 1720/21 when he
purchased 100 acres of land on the west branch of Elk River from Henry
Hollingsworth. On 18 MAY 1726, Martin sold 240 acres of land in New Castle
County, Delaware to his brother Thomas; he had received this land from his
parents. Martin and his wife Esther sold a 10-acre section of land (patented to
him in 1716) to John McCullock on 23 NOV 1738. Martin sold the land for "many
good causes him thereunto moving but more especially for the consideration of 3
pounds 15 shillings Pennsylvania." [59]

Shortly after selling the land, Martin probably moved to Orange County, Virginia
where he purchased 650 acres from Thomas Branson,Sr. (part of Branson's
850-acre, 12 NOV 1735 patent land) on 13 JAN 1741/42. [60] (Tract 147B, Map 8)
Martin's son Nathaniel Cartmell purchased the other 200 acres of this patent
land from Nathaniel Thomas for 60 pounds on 7 MAY 1747. [61] (Tract 147A, Map
8).

I would look for William's baptism in Lancashire if you can't find it in
Wakefield. The Garstang Cartmells farmed the slopes of the Pennines and
Wakefield is just the other side of those hills.
Assuming William was in his twenties and thirties when he sired those
children, then he would be born at the end of the 16thC and of the
generation of my John Cartmell bap 19 Sep 1597 at Garstang St Helens. I
know of no brothers.
The previous generation included
Richard b c1575 m Jane Stirzaker 1596
James b c1570 m Jane ?
Richard and James father was William!
It would be appropriate for a child to be named after his grandfather but
William was a common name and the children's names don't seem to echo the
names I know.
I'll let you know if I find a possible link.

There are several mentions of the Ship Submission sailing.
Bear with me while I rummage through my records. I also have John Cartmell
listed as Master of another ship and as him having taken skins and tobacco as
cargo over to Whitehaven and of course bringing folks back when he came. Also
Joseph Cartmell is mentioned as Master of a ship.
I'm not the most organized person, so this may take awhile to find the other
listings.
Any guesses?

Gary,
In reading one of your posts, saw where you mentioned that John Cartmill came
to Augusta and got the 1745 Patent when he was 25 years old.
Where did you find the information on John's age at the time of the Patent? I
would love to have this for my records.
Earliene and I took a wild trip to Bath County, Virginia this summer. Staying
in Pocahontas County, West Virginia at a friend's camp. One morning we set off
for Augusta County to do some VERY serious research. We never got past Bath
County. All the names we have read about kept jumping out at us and after
several side trips up one road or another, had to head back before dark.
But the most interesting "side trip" was when we passed Indian Draft Road.
John Cartmill's Patent was on the Cowpasture (a river) and Indian Draft (a
creek) was mentioned several times. So we were off and running. We went to
Fort Lewis or at least what is left of it. There now is a wonderful Bed and
Breakfast on the site.
Old John's Patent says, "below Fort Lewis". So we feel we got very close to
the actual site of his patent. What a thrill!!!
Paula
West Virginia
(My Cartmills never wandered far away)
My Fellow Cartmill Researchers,
I have been following all correspondence on the Cartmill List with much
interest.
But....I am more confused now than ever.
I am descended from David M.Cartmill, a son of Thomas and Mary Warwick
Cartmill. They eventually "landed" in Bath County, Kentucky via Augusta/Bath,
Virginia.
The written records on my lines are few and far between. So I take what I can
get with much glee.
Most of my confusion comes from the Henry lines. So many Henrys. But I feel
the only way to sort out the John descendants, is to sort out Henry's at the
same time. I may have some of yours, you may have some of mine. But we're all
in this together.
My cousin, Earliene and I came to the conclusion several months ago, that
there was indeed a JOHN and a HENRY that were brothers. So therefore I may not
be a Henry descendant, but feel that I am definitely a cousin to all you Henry
researchers.
We DO NOT think we are descended from Nathaniel and Dorothy Cartmill. Probably
related but not descended. I think the biggest mistake made so far with
Cartmill research is thinking we are all descended from these two.
I want to throw this out to all of you and get your reaction:
"STAFFORD COUNTY, VIRGINIA--WILL BOOK Z--(1699-1709)--PAGE 2
19 October 1699--Anne (x) Carmalt, late of Maryland, widow, but now of
Stafford County, Virginia, binds as a servant to my loving friend, Edward
Barton, of Stafford County, my son, John Carmalt, he being now eleven years of
age-----in this my great want and necessity. Witnessed: Thomas (x) Chapman,
Thomas (x) Chapman, Jr., G. Mason (Church Warden), Recorded 9 November 1699."
"STAFFORD COUNTY, VIRGINIA.--WILL BOOK "Z"--(1699-1709--PAGE 3
19 October 1699--Anne (x) Carmalt binds Henry Carmalt, age 5 and Bridget
Carmalt, age 7, to Burr Harrison."
I know it's not exactly the spelling we want, Carmalt, but really too close to
ignore.
So this John born 1688 and Henry born 1694. I would say very close to who
we're looking for.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Paula

This would (probably) put him as a member of the Fylde group of Cartmells
(Lytham is just south of Blackpool in the Fylde).

As a rigger he would have lots of opportunities for travelling and this is
soon after the railway system covered much of the country, including
Joseph's home in Lancashire.
It looks like he's travelled to the other end of the country, found a wife
and settled down in her home village (Stoke Damerel is so small I can't
find it in any of my gazeteers although I vaguely recollect that, or a
similar name, from my holidays in Devon; it's probably a one street
village)

Hi Carol,
I will start with Henry 1, Henry was 85yrs old when he died in Botetourt
Co. this would put his birth around 1701. Henry1 occupation was Appraiser
same as John1. James 1of Henry1 was older, the James that was born about
1740 could be his son or John1 son. This is the only thing that I have
found on James1 was a court record dated Aug 1766 Givens Vs Cartmill James
Cartmill brother of John Cartmill Augusta Co. Court text no 5.
John1 moved to Orange Co or Augusta Co. 1745 at the age of 25 there is a
land grant at that time. John1 occupation was Appraiser for Augusta Co.
Court. His son Capt. John Cartmill join his father as an Appraiser in Aug.
19, 1767 Augusta Co. Court records book No.11 page 136, line 221. For John2
to hold this position he would have to be 18yrs old.
The John that never married that I have was Henry 2 son. Henry2 that
married Sarah Anderson Elizabeth, Thomas and John never married. John left
his legacies to his niece Ann Sisson, also Thomas left his legacie to Ann
Sisson.
Greenberry Sisson, the Sissonville book shows the date as 1866 later I
found his Will, it stated Sept. 1865 thats why the to differance in dates.
Two differance source at the time.
Yes they are duplicate when I put in Julia Ann Sisson into the file from my
Williams file they duplicated.
I hope this can help Gary.

Gary,
Thanks for sharing your info on Henry Cartmill. I have noted some of the
differences in our research and welcome corrections.
My records indicate Henry(1) was born about 1716 and married Mary after
1736. You have a birth date on their son James(2) of 1721, which would be
prior to his parents marriage. I show James(2) as being born about 1740
and that he served in the Revolutionary War in 1782 with the Militia of
Montgomery Co., VA. Your date of 1721 would make him 60 years old during
the war.
I show John Cartmill with birth date of 1751 and married to Anne Skillern,
whereas you have 1720. I have also ran across another source that
indicates John never married.....can anyone confirm?
Your info on the family of Henry C. Sisson and Rebecca Samuels was new in
my research and I appreciate receiving it, although I noticed in your
posting there were discrepencies in the dates, for instance, Greenberry,
died September 1865 but below that it states buried 1866. This has shown
up a couple of times and I thought you might want to check your program.
There is also a duplicate in children listed for Henry C. and Rebecca;
child 10 and 11 (Thomas & Henry C., Jr.) same as child 3 & 8.
I hope you don't mind the corrections and/or comments but am always willing
to help others. Thanks again.

Here's the address for a War of 1812 database that is free in January:
http://www.sierra.com/sierrahome/familytree/records/
As an example, there are 158 Downings, 186 Hardings, 229 Lucases. It will
only display the first 100 hits so unless you have an unusual name [or the
first name is early in the alphabet] you are probably going to need a first
name.
All of the vets I am aware of were there-which is pretty remarkable in my
experience. Generally I'm lucky to find one or two.

Carol,
The information on Nathaniel's birth place that I listed came from
information that Bill Cartmell gathered for the Cartmill Family newsletter
and from John Lupton who is a descendent of Nathaniel.
I have no concrete proof of that only the writings of early historians. I
am not sure but that they linked Nathaniel to that area just because of the
Cartmell district.... I have not located the shipping records telling
which ship Nathaniel came on or where it came from. I have not updated my
line to rootsweb for sometime Carol but I am not a descendant of Nathaniel
or Henry that can be proven. I have collected Data on any
Cartmill/Cartmell I run across. I can only FOR CERTAIN
Prove my relationship back to John Cartmill b. abt. 1779/1780 VA.
Who married Rebecca Hendricks/Henderson(two marriage records each has a
different surname but same date) in Feb. 1822, Bath County, KY. We are
almost sure that he is the son of Thomas and Mary Warwick Cartmill as we
have all but eliminated any other parents.
They sold land in Bath, KY and moved to Indiana for a short time and then
onto IL where they died. I can send you a report if you'd like. None of
the early historians researched this line of the family so we had to begin
from scratch. The rest of how I think the family links is still conjecture
using what information that is available to this point.
If you want me to post how I think it played just let me know but remember
that it is conjecture and I have only my thirty years experience of doing
research as a backup. I have in no way seen all the records that must be
there.....

Subject: RE: Nathaniel's Cartmell's birthplace
Dear Earliene & John:
When I go back through the rather paltry references that I have in my
CARTMELL
file, I still can not find a source for why I put Westmoreland Co, England
as
the birth place for Nathaniel Cartmell, d. ca1695. I know that I did not
make
it up, but until I can find something definitive, I do not see it as set in
stone. Although John's response about his known Cartmells as non-Quakers
may
be important. John, are you saying that the Cartmells you are descended
from
seem not to have migrated out of England, by and large?
Earliene, I noticed that you put Nathaniel's birth place as township of
Cartmell in Lancashire in Northumberland. Is Northumberland a region as
opposed to a county? Have you posted your Cartmell info to the rootsweb
recently? I would love to compare your info with mine.
