G'day fellow CARTLEDGE descendants/researchers
I know very little about my CARTLEDGE links but hope to explore this branch a little more
closely in the near future.
My GGG grandmother was Ann or Mary Ann CARTLEDGE, probably born in April 1815 in
Manchester, England. The IGI records a christening in that month that seems to match up at
this early stage of research and this is the data accepted by other researchers of this
line.
She came to Australia (specifically Tasmania) from Gravesend aboard the Strathfieldsaye,
arriving in Hobart on 15 August 1834. She was listed as a maid of all work but cleared out
before she could be allocated an employer. The voyage of the Strathfieldsaye is documented
in the British Parliamentary Papers (available online) and in the book Damned Whores and
God's Police. These 300 or so "good" girls were brought to Tasmania to
address the imbalance of the sexes in the mostly male penal colony. Reports indicate that
men lined up to greet their arrival at the dock and saw them as little better than
prostitutes provided by the government for their use. Ann absconded before she could be
allocated an employer as had been agreed. She probably changed her given name at this
stage to avoid the attention of the government.
Mary Ann married convict James or William MOORE (he also changed his name, possibly to
avoid his convict background) within a year of arriving, on 29 June 1835 at St
George's Church of England in Sorrell, Tasmania.
I have a pretty good idea of the family line from then on. My next project though will be
to track Ann/Mary Ann before she came to Australia.
Does this family sound like anyone any of you have an interest in? I know I haven't
provided much to work on - mainly because I don't have it myself yet!
Good luck to all of you with your research.

PS One of the Australians killed in the terrorist attack in Bali was a CARTLEDGE from
Melbourne. She remains in my thoughts.
