My g-grandfather Lewis CARTLEDGE (born 28 Aug 1851) came to America, married and had 7
children. He had 4 sons who helped on the farm - John, Leonard, William and LeRoy who went
by Roy. His daughters were Charlotte, Nora and Myrtle. Charlotte is my maternal
grandmother and I am named after her. If your g-grandmother went by Eliza rather than
Charlotte Elizabeth, I may have a letter of interest to you.
The letter is dated Apr 8th 1911 from Eastgate, Bourne (England)The letter begins:
"Dear Uncle & Aunt & Cousins
We were very pleased to get your letter about a month ago & to hear you are all well
or as my cousin Roy puts it, all OK. We have not been so well - having been choked up with
colds & other little ills, but pleased to say rather better at time of writing.
I am sorry the seeds did not grow. They would have been a pleasure to you. It would have
seemed like a breath of Old England. I am glad we don't have such a long winter. Our
trees & hedges are now showing peeps of green, & some, such as the gooseberry,
current & lilac are already in green leaf. I love the spring everything seems so fresh
& pure & clean.
I am glad I was right in my guesses about the children. In the group, we have got you all
but Roy & Myrtle.
Dear Uncle you were quite right about the flood. It was just at the point you name. I am
pleased you think my brother a fine fellow he was when in the Queens Uniform
he stood 5 feet 11 1/2 inches & he looked a picture but we all look different as the
years go by. It was not Ted Ringham with him, but a man named Brown but no one that you
ever knew. I have got a catalouge of Mays works & there are some good pictures of the
old tanyard & the artificial manure works with some of the men you know. I will get
Dad to shew me who's who in them & mark them for you next week so you will get the
book about a week after this letter. I thought you would be interested in the old places,
but when you see it you wont mistake Tom & Ted Ringham. Ted has a tub like a great fat
Farmer, he does love his Beer my word he does
Now I dont think I have any more to say just now so will close with love from all to you
all, hoping all are in good health & please dont be so long before you write again
I will not keep you so long again good bye now & God bless you all I am your loving
niece & cousin Eliza Cartledge
Not Elizabeth thank you Master Roy"
On the 1861 Census for Eastgate Bourne Lincolnshire (page 17) Luke Cartledge is listed age
9 with his mother Maria Cartledge age 46 and a sister age 10. The mother's maiden name
is Whitehead. On page 22 of the same census there is listed her mother Ann Whitehead age
70 with a grandson Henry W Cartledge age 19 who may be an older brother to Luke and his
sister.
Lewis Cartledge(Luke in England)came to America as a ship's hand when about 19 yrs. He
married Mary PAILING on 18 June 1879. They moved from Wisconsin to Iowa to North Dakota.
Lewis died 4 Aug 1931 at Forbes, Dickey, North Dakota. His wife lived until 1944 and the
couple has quite the posterity.
I'll be watching for a response. -Char Kibbie
