At Mazomanie, Dane, Wisconsin on 18 June 1879 Lewis (or Louis) CARTLEDGE married Mary
PAILING and they had 7 children - 4 sons and 3 daughters. Lewis was a small, wiry man who
loved the sea more than farming. He is my mother's maternal grandfather (my
great-grandfather).
Over the years I have gathered oodles of pages and hundreds of names and pictures of his
posterity in the United States.
All I really knew for certain about my great-grandfather was that his birthdate was 28
August 1851 and that he was born in Lincolnshire, England. He died 4 Aug 1931 at Forbes,
Dickey, North Dakota. When he died he "has many nieces and nephews in England."
(from his obituary)
My mother and her cousin had a list of "I think"s:
I think his father's name was John.
I think his mother's name was Maria; and that her maiden name was WHITEHEAD.
I think his father was a butcher.
I think his father died when grandpa was young and his mother moved back to Bourn where
her mother lived.
On the 1861 Census for Eastgate, Bourne, Lincolnshire, Eng. I found Luke CARTLEDGE, age 9,
and his sister Eliza, age 10, with their widowed mother Maria, age 46. Hoping this to be
my great-grandfather I ordered his birth certificate. BINGO! Exact match on the birthdate
and parents' names. I found my great-grandfather!! His sister's marriage
certificate (She married Frederick FALKNER 27 Apr 1868 at Bourn, Lincolnshire and her
father's name was John [deceased]a boatman) I also ordered the birth certificate for
Henry CARTLEDGE, age 19, on the 1861 census who was living with his grandmother Ann
WHITEHEAD, age 70, also in Eastgate. I was hoping he would be Luke's older brother,
but according to the birth certificate his parents are Edward and Frances (formerly
PEARCE) CARTLEDGE. But on the birth certificate is states that Edward is a butcher. I
really feel there must be some connection.
In America Lewis's sons (4 a son-in-law) helped on the ranch and they were large
men. I knew these great-uncles of mine, so when mom told me her grandfather was a small
wiry man, I found it hard to believe because these men were big fellows.
Please respond. Who's your great-grandmother?
