So far all who have answered the Cartledge subject have been in the lineage
of the Cartledges who immigrated possibly before 1700, apparently to
Pennsylvania, and pretty much spread to the south of the United States.
My Cartledge line is a different one and comes from the Cartledge family who
lived in Nottinghamshire. My g-g-grandfather was John Cartledge, b. in 1809
in Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire. He came to the US in 1842; his wife
and two children came the following year. They settled in NY state. John had
a brother William who also came to the US, followed by William's wife and
children later. John's son was also named William. That William homesteaded
in Minnesota, fought in the Civil War, married twice, moved to Washington
State, and died in 1927 when he was living in the old soldiers' home in
Retsil, WA.
The immigrant John Cartledge's descendents are only myself and a second
cousin who has no children. The brother William had a large family and a
number of descendents, but I haven't found any of them.
I would enjoy hearing from any Cartledges who might be connected to the
Nottingham Cartledges.
