Hi Cristie,
Many of the French names were changed, or changed over time, after coming to the United
States. Cloutier became Clukey, Berthiaume became Barkyomb, and other amazing
transformations.
Do you think she may have come from Canada?
The way that most French-Canadian genealogy is traced is by marriages. What I recommend
is starting a new message (in other words, not in this string of old messages) stating
your grandmothers full name as you know it, who she married, when and where if possible,
or at least a year estimate. You can add where they died if you know, and any kids names.
If you know where they died or were married, you should try to see if their parents
names were included on those records. Any time you can jump back a generation, you
increase your odds of finding another researcher working on the same family.
For the record, there were at least 4 different "original" CARTIERs who came
to "New France" and had children:
1. Paul CARTIER, from Poitou, France, who married a BOYER in 1673 at Quebec.
2. Joseph CARTIER dit Larose, from Angoumois, France, who married Marguerite CELLE in 1674
at Montreal.
3. Pierre CARTIER, of Bernay, France, who married Catherine GAUTHIER in 1675 at or around
Sillery, Quebec.
4. Guillaume CARTIER, of Bretagne, France, who married Marie-Etiennette GARNIER in 1685 at
Neuville, Quebec. (These are my pioneer ancestors.)
Good luck!
